Qantas Business Class meals & menus

Soup - offered in the interim after I had ordered the fillet "lightly cooked".

The fillet- I did order "lightly cooked" and I believe the attentive staff wanted it to be at room temperature to minimize the amount of reheating required. They offered the soup in the meantime.

They did well and while still not "rare" it was tender and the port wine sauce was fine.

Breakfast was good, although the toast was cold and hard (as generally the case).

SYD-BNE, “lunch time” flight, 4th February:

Still sitting on this flight and disappointed by the rather mediocre offerings and the lacklustre service. Would have thought that a flight smack in the middle of lunch time would have justified a proper meal but alas, a “snack” offering of either a quiche or a boring salad was all that they could muster. “Risky business” Pinot Grigio was the yummiest on my plate.

Quiche was called “Cheese and Beef” quiche but no beef was to be found. So if that thing really contained beef, then it must have been some fat rendering in the dough or similar which makes me sick just writing it. The mushy peas and supermarket shelf grade onion chutney didn’t help either.

Unfortunately, the food in the Sydney “Business” lounge was also horrid today (worst beef cuts in the so called Beef Bourguignon) so generally underwhelmed and underfed.

Not ideal at all.
I commented a few weeks back that the SYD J lounge has noticeably dropped off and is quite dire these days.

Well MEL Spice Bar was at usual standards (I posted in that thread) and no complaints. CBR was offering a chicken cacciatore with roast potatoes which looked reasonable (but I did not taste). SYD has been dire for a long time though absolutely.

Actually I was pleased with the variety in SYD J today because normally it is always chicken. So I filled up on the beef (without rice) with the beetroot salad and some veg sticks.

SYD has been dire for more than a couple of years but I was pleased with something else today besides chicken. A rare event.

MEL J pretty crowded at the moment but noodles with black vinegar, chilli oil and wombok on offer (you can have it with chicken also) and beef bourguignon and roast potatoes as the hot offerings (excl soup).

Choice of lamb shanks or chicken with roast potatoes. Had the chicken which wasn't too bad. No PDB and the cabin manager was rather brusque, not really suited to working a premium cabin.

Did you manage to get any decent bits of the beef? I swear, every single bit had fat and sinew in it and was pretty much inedible. Maybe I just had bad luck with my portion?

Had a similar beef dish and Melbourne a couple of weeks back and the meat quality was noticeably superior over there.

You know, just my thoughts ... and I'm a QF loyalist ... during COVID lockdown there were a couple routes which I always fly semi-regularly, and unfortunately due to QF only offering a JQ service I booked with VA instead ...

The overall VA Business offering - pre-boarding, pre-departure drink, cabin service, and the meals - 9 times out of 10, they cough all over QF.

Don't get me wrong - cabin service, vast majority of times QF is excellent - they're both absolutely on par there ...

I'm just over QF pies and quiche ... no pre-departure drink ... I've already been lined up at the gate waiting to board! I'm clearly thirsty! ... and I left the lounge early to make it to the gate for pre-boarding.

My bowl in SYD had some meaty pieces so I think you were a tad unlucky, but they were still far between and I didn't finish the bowl as the remaining stew was light on flavour. When I got to MEL I thought the bourguignon looked a nicer version.

Currently in SYD and the bourguignon is improved; lots more meat and mushrooms and good colour and taste that I finished the bowl. Before I was given the dish I mentioned that MEL is serving the same but it looks better and they nodded! Do they share info between the lounges? Other options in SYD are chicken wings or chicken sandwiches. I asked if they had any tuna or ham sandwiches and they said they would look ... and brought out another tray of chicken sandwiches. 🤬

BNE-SYD, dinner flight on 7th Feb on 737:

This time I was finally lucky! First, I love how Brissy has that extra entrance for status PAX which gets you away from all the riff raff and straight into the lounge area. Makes such a huge difference to the whole airport experience.

Then the Business lounge was near empty but still as good as ever. Lots of hot choices, there were chicken wings (super tasty but I always struggle getting enough meat off those bones so generally not a huge fan but most other guests seemed to love them), a lentil and cauliflower soup and pasta bolognaise. Had the latter not long ago in the Sydney lounge and it was WAY tastier in Brisbane. And yes, I enjoyed my cider (and the sweets too ;)).

Luckily, the flight itself would be really good (besides the usual $hitfight at the gate which Qantas just never gets right it seems) as well. Very senior and experienced crew as is typical for Qantas, this time in the "friendly and welcoming" version. To my delight, meal options were a 'Blade steak in mushroom sauce' besides the typical salad option (is it always 'prosciutto salad' which consists mainly of baby spinach leaves these days? It has been on all my recent flights from memory...).

Needless to say, I had the steak and was conscious that blade is not exactly a superior cut. They had slow cooked it down to totally tenderise the sinews to a glibbery fat (similar to beef cheeks I found) but it was still good enough for a 1 hour flight I found. The highlight though was the Grenache (Krondorf Founders View) which was excellent and goes for $18 at Dan Murphy's so I'll head over there for a few ones tomorrow ;)

IMG_9461.JPG

Then came the strangest thing- the very caring and proactively refilling crew offered the 1/3 emptied bottles to their J class passengers. So I got handed a 2/3 bottle of that yummy Grenache and the lady across the aisle a half bottle of the Shaw & Smith Sav B. I never had this before on any airline- does this happen regularly? It always pains me watching the crews pouring away those wines, especially if it's a nice drop (or champagne- I had to endure the sight of almost full bottles of Dom going into the drain which is a sight that tears me apart o_O ).

So I really loved this crew and am happy to report that the Grenache tastes as nice on the ground as it does in the air 😛 As many times before, when Qantas does something well, it does it really well. If not, then it really really sucks.

Nice to see something new in the rotation 👏 and that BNE is back operationally.
Regarding wine to take away, I've had it a few times domestically and once on a DPS but definitely never expect it. You do have to wonder how much gets poured out which is a tragedy.

I think I've received a bottle definitely once, maybe twice over the past 10 or so years. A very very nice gesture indeed (and I suspect they know the bottles will go to waste when the bar cart is removed in SYD) so why not? seems to me a good CS move from the crew - the wine is open anyway so they're not using unopened product and if pax enjoyed it why not offer them the chance to have another glass or two at their hotel or home at the other end? seems a zero cost effort that generates goodwill - and boy do QF need goodwill right now :)

Yes, I've been given wine a couple of times in J to take away. Once on Qantas and once on Virgin that I can recall. In both cases, the bottles were unopened though and in the case of VA, it was to apologise that no food (at all) had been loaded onto the flight.

Oh yes, that reminds me- it had happened to me before but to make up for an issue (I think it was my usual problem- the only meal choice left was fish which I can't eat so I ended up with a children meal from the back of the plane). It even was a bottle of champers, Ion BA that was I think.

But definitely never had happened to me on QF Domestic before and yes, why not? I wish more crew did this.

I've found the emptier the cabin, the more it happens, because apparently I've had half the bottle so I may as well finish the rest later 😂.

And usually with a little "make sure you hide this in your bag as we're not meant to do this" comment.

From memory the only time it's occurred on QF though is when something has gone awry.

Side note - that might be flat iron steak, which is a really underrated piece of meat.

Yes, but the crew can’t get around AFFers posting the flight details, so as they may be tracked down for the deed. 🤷‍♂️
