Qantas Business Class meals & menus

With apologies for the cutoff picture — lamb moussaka with green vegetables. BNE - CNS 19:50.

Moussaka is a favourite for me. And I’ve been lucky to have and make some really great dishes. Not surprisingly this one couldn’t stack up. But objectively as an airline meal it was pretty good. Generous serve and quite tasty.

Other option was a quinoa and egg salad.

Service initially was great. Quick and proactive with top ups.

Overall fine, but halfway through the flight the CSM sat down and didn’t see him until descent. Lazy, chatty crew. Requests met with rolling eyes or sighs. Probably says it all that one of the pilots brought out their own meal trays near the end of the cruise.

Won’t name here, but will give feedback for what it’s worth.
Yes please give feedback as it drives me crackers when J crew don't notice there's passengers on board. They're usually great but worth mentioning.

So, what are our thoughts on what long haul J menu's/service will be like? I'm assuming all crew will have masks and faceshields. Minimal service ( all one tray?), or a more normal J service? Look forward to thoughts .....

Oh I bet it will be a welcome excuse to save some bucks, you can bet that Qantas will keep dragging out "Covid-appropriate" service as long as possible. But competition will play a role here- if the likes of SQ and QR come back with elaborate multi course dining, Qantas might have to up their game again.

'might' being the operative word :( The golden handcuffs of status means QF can get away with quite a lot... angled beds in business class for years while Cathay and Singapore had full flat beds... droopy skybeds while competitors were already moving on to second generation full-flats... 'cafe breakfasts' on flights from Asia while competitors offer a full choice...

I'm hoping they'll revert to normal service. I flew J class PER>SYD then BNE>PER in June and it felt like a premium economy meal to me. Choice of main only (it was reasonable quality but poorly presented) and a cake and lindt chocolate for dessert. Usual sourdough. The whole J class meal experience wasn't there. So QANTAS, if you're listening, I just don't see how you can justify the drop in quality. The pandemic isn't a reasonable excuse; my business isn't offering substandard quality because we're in a pandemic. Hopefully the full gourmet experience will return, as that is half the fun of business (for me).

As soon as I decided to forget about status, QANTAS have been chasing me to retain it. So I will now go with the better quality airline, particularly for overseas travel. I'm not tolerating premium economy meals if I'm paying J class fares. LISTEN UP QANTAS.

if the likes of SQ and QR come back with elaborate multi course dining,
I was on several flights with CX and LH last week. Multi course dining on every flight, indistinguishable from pre-COVID. The only thing COVID about the service was face masks on FAs, and LH's insistence I wear their paper mask, not my cloth one. QR FAs, who also had multicourse dining, also had faceshields and daggy looking plastic gowns, but that was several months ago. Not sure if they're still playing that game.

Cheers skip

PS Some nice news in the QF email I got today
Qantas’ premium menus and amenities will be offered on all flights, and we’re planning for service to look and feel similar to pre-COVID, with some minor modifications. Once onboard sit back and enjoy our inflight entertainment.

The cynic in me does wonder about the wording 'similar' and 'minor modifications'

The new « simpler and fairer »
I just can't give this a haha reaction because we all know it would be one of those insane cackles indicating that this is way too close to the mark to be amusing...

like everyone else the cynic in me saw that note in the email and thought uh huh. So they will probably enhance away PDB, everything on one tray etc. Very much like the US carriers are reported to have done.

Now obviously I think we all stand to be surprised by what these minor changes are but the fact that they don't come out and actually SAY what they are says a bit. I mean you don't know until you step on board your 14 hour flight (or read reviews here) to have any idea what the paired down service might be.

I am torn on this... there's a (very large) part of me that hopes they have pared down the service so it doesn't take an hour to get the first drink or three hours to serve a meal 😐 (I suspect however it will be pared down and *still* take three hours :()

On CX J last week they served the drink and nut thing, then after a lengthy wait everything else on one tray. The worst of both worlds. LH were everything on one tray too. In both cases I ate the hot main first then the cold appetiser.

cheers skip

Whilst I don't expect the service in J to be what it was pre-covid, I also don't expect it to be the new normal. This has happened very quickly and there are just some things that won't be able to be done in 2 weeks (such as design a full menu that can be plated, in a port that isn't normally International for QF).

If QF can increase their international travel to enough scale then eventually they may be able to have someone in the top level of management dedicated to the international arm again like they had before COVID which would presumably help with optimising the service to whatever the new normal will be.

What's the latest on drinks service in DOM J in regard to spirits?

Flying PER-BME on Tuesday and PJM likes a G&T. Any prospect of that?

I really hope they bring spirits back in J soon. Virgin the "mid market" carrier even offers spirits.
