Qantas Business Class meals & menus

And here is the Green Chicken Curry served yesterday on the return QF1765 OOL-CBR. Again, given bread even though I said no thanks! The curry was quite good. The other choice was pork and cabbage. No one near me selected that, so i don't know how it looked or tasted. The red wine was quite good too - a 2014 Barossa Cabernet. Again, quite an acceptable meal for an accidental glutard.

I wish they would bring back dessert or something a bit more than a single plain Lindt ball - even a flavoured one would be nicer.

You get a dessert in a box on the longer transcon flights plus the lindt chocolate. They also gave us ice cream towards the end of the flight on BNE-PER last week (plus more lindt chocs).

Self service buffet, for real? :oops:

To be fair, I don't think Cairns has had much in the way of covid scares for quite a while, other than the idiot who scaled a balcony and kicked down a door to escape quarantine. I understand she tested negative though. (OT but I don't understand how people end up quarantining in Cairns? How are they arriving?)

She was a domestic traveller from Sydney

Queensland lifted the buffet restrictions on 25 June, about the same time they were getting new cases in Brisbane.


 
Most of the Air New Zealand lounges in NZ have self-service buffets...
True that! Always found that funny as in other things Australia is far more slack with regards of Covid prevention. A few weeks before the renewed outbreak, literally no on was wearing a mask on Sydney's public transport, just as an example amongst many...
 
Self service buffet and drinks back in Cairns QP
When I have been in PER, the QF lounge there (J) has continued as self-serve each time. The only consolation to covid was a staff member standing at the buffet entrance area, to squirt your hands before you went in - then you were free to touch everything communal as per normal, including serving implements. (I think the pizza area was closed, but there were pizza style melts at the buffet.)
 
QF859 - DRW to ADL lunch 23/04.

Options were a Quinoa Salad, Chicken with a lemon sauce and a Beef Brisket.

Went with the Brisket. It was nice enough, nowhere near Meat Maiden standard but it doesn’t get much better than that! Came with a rosti which was swimming in the sauce so a bit soggy, but it was still fairly tasty. A couple of vege’s to round out the meal. Served with the standard accompaniments.

No pre-departure drink but the lunch service was quick anyway so it wasn’t the end of the world.

Anyone with practical advice for me?

My practical advice would be - Load up in the lounge before boarding.

I'm someone with dietary situation (more like choice rather than a restriction). I'm a vegetarian, but I don't eat eggs. Not in the less altered true form (say, an omelette, hard/soft boiled or as a sauce). But I can eat them when they are baked into as part of a muffin or banana bread or cake etc.

Note : All of the below is pre-CoVID, unless tagged otherwise

For such reasons, I always used to pre-order my meals. I select the option "Indian Vegetarian" or "AVML" for catering purposes

I'm usually served with some sort of rice & lentils, mushrooms or eggplant. There is no dessert offered in these meals, instead an apple or a pack of dried fruits. I once was served pasta with mushroom ragu, garlic/herb bread and some panna cotta? don't remember exactly

My strategy is that I eat in the lounge before boarding. Or if I find the pre-ordered meal not satisfying, I ask for wine & cheese. Usually the FA won't say no if he/she knows that the pre-ordered meal ain't working for you.

There have been instances where I asked the FA if there were any vego meals left over from the meal service. If there is any leftover and if no one in the crew wants it, they are more than happy to give it to me. For instance on a SYD-HKG, the I pre-ordered AVML and it was not that great - some asian greens with rice .. the greens were pretty much blanched and drained over the rice. Nothing more. No sauce or any other condiment to offset the fresh blanched flavour of greens. But I had a look at the on-board menu and they had rice, lentils & eggPlant+Potato curry. Once the meal service was over, I asked the FA if they had any vego meal leftover and they were more than happy to heat it up & served it for me. This was in Y.

However, post-CoVID, I don't see any option to pre-order my meal. I'm a doing a lot of CBR-SYD-CBR in Y (self-funded) these days (or at least I was, until SYD was locked-down) and I'm only privy to a cup of coffee and an occasional cookie. When doing J between CBR & SYD, I normally doze off and have not eaten any J meals on that route. Although going by what's posted in this thread, I don't think there is going to be any vego options. It's either sausage role or meat pie or a frittata or an omelette - none of which I can eat anyways. Better to load up in the lounge before departure

This was what I was just served in Y on a PER - DRW flight. Described as beef (red wine and onion sauce from what I could tell), it was was relatively tasty and no gristle. Honestly, it looks no different to some of the meals shown in this thread served in J. Only difference is the box verse plate.

but it does make me wonder sometimes...
I have come to the realisation that in the times we are currently in, travel, is a form of luxury, even if it is in deep, discount Y ... I can safely say that for some of us travel is slowly picking up and some others are probably back to their pre-CoVID travel levels.

In any case, I'm starting to see that the line between "premium J" and "regular, not so premium Y" is almost non-existent. It may not have existed in the first place and my belief of its existence was a mere mirage.

The premium experience is waning off ... I'm nowhere near any LT status with QF. But I'm happy where I am (QF-WP until Dec 2022) and if I'm only able to get a cookie & small bottle of water in Y, so be it .. I'd be delighted if I got a glass of wine ... but I don't think I will miss it ...

When flying J, I'd be happy to sit back, relax & enjoy the flight by slipping into a quick nap ... I believe gone are the days when I used to look forward to my J experience .. I still look forward to flying, at least once a month ... I'm super excited the night before my flight ... but I'm excited because I'm able to get on a plane and go somewhere .. not because I look forward to a meal or a glass of wine or a "Welcome back Mr. "

It's nice that I have always been welcomed back .. but I guess the puffed chest feeling of such a greeting fades by the time I have reached my seat. From there on, I'm a seat number, illuminated by a faint yellow dot of a light.

I think when international flights are back (back as in being able to fly to MAA via MEL-BNE-HKG-CMB) I might get excited again at the prospect of doing long distance international. But until then, I'm happy to keep myself happy flying Y or J (doesn't matter), enjoying the lounge wines & beer, the not-so-priority boarding and not to mention, the not-so-looking-forward-to onboard meals :)

There have been specials meals in Y awhile now, and a bit longer in J. A couple of months ago when the option to select a special meal still wasn’t available when booking, I rang. The first time I rang, the GFML was added to the booking. Next time the agent made it a permanent record on my profile, so now it’s automatic. Try calling to add your choice.

Mind you, that doesn’t help when the FA gives your meal to another passenger by mistake! Instead of serving special meals first, she put them all in the trolley. Happily I did fill up in the lounge prior to boarding.

Really?!?! I have only done SYD-MEL, SYD-CBR & SYD-OOL over the past few months and I have never had the choice to select a meal. When I selected the AVML or Indian Vegetarian meal there is a message that says "This meal choice is not available on the route" .. or "This meal choice is not available on QFxx_"

May be next time I will call up the CC and see if they can put in a request for me.

re : FA giving your meal to someone else - well, now, that is something :D

Special meals are only available in Y on the Tasman and on sectors from PER and DRW to capital cities. They are available in J on all sectors. There are 6 categories of special meals (they have been renamed Dietary Required Meals and are listed on Qantas.com).
