Qantas Business Class meals & menus

If I were you, I'd rather not risk it and pre-order.

Thanks .. let me think about it .... still leaning more towards leaving things to chance :)

. On my flight this week Monday (just a few posts up), the only vegetarian option would have been the soup

THAT SOUP looks amazing! I could chug a bowl of it ... if it tastes as good as it looks in the picture :p

Wines on today’s evening SYD-ADL are the Risky Business Pinot Grigio and the Dandelion Lion’s Tooth, the latter a blend of 95% Shiraz and 5% Riesling. I enjoy blends like this and it reminds me of the Shiraz/Viogner trend a few years back. Also happy to see a white that is not the seemingly ubiquitous S&S Sauvignon Blanc.

I had something very similar last month .. it was amazing and went really with the meal I had ... Looking forward to another serving of this blend very soon :)

The blend, even at 5%, really makes a difference. The straight Dandelion Shiraz can knock your head off after a glass or two (I generally take it camping now so it doesn’t matter if you wake up the next morning slightly worse for wear :p)

If you’re happy with this soup as a main, then certainly leave it to chance. It smelled and tasted even better than it looks.

Crew told me that after smelling mine, two other pax behind and besides me asked if they could have a little cup to try after all ;) So this soup is certainly a winner!

I've done a few BNE trips over the past month or so and it seems afternoon refreshments have been "enhanced" a little bit to include an option of "small savoury pies" (and every time offered the crew have hilighted "small"). Other options being the usual soup variation and the cheese box.

Honestly I've changed my habit and hardly eat anything on these shorter domestic flights (prefer to eat more in lounge or elsewhere) - a drink or two and that's about it, so have not actually sampled these small pies, but they did look small. Having said that on one flight had a couple of UM's sitting in J (sisters I think) who gobbled them up happily. I guess party pies are still popular :D
I also have noted the slight enhancement and I do appreciate it .
I usually do not get time to fill up in the lounge pre departure so I like something more substantial on board even on the shorter flights.

Had the Risky Business a couple of weeks ago. Pretty drinkable

So, I had the Risky Business Pinot Grigio this weekend on OOL-MEL and OMG! It was so good ... personally, I'd liked mine a bit more chilled that how it was served, but it was really good.

On my next flights, I asked the FA if they had any Risky Business and was kindly obliged :)

No, Shiraz-Riesling on the flights this weekend, though :(

so, @Berlin :

When I saw the menu on MEL-AKL, I said to myself "gosh, should've listened to Berlin and pre-ordered my meal". Partly because the menu featured a "Broccoli and Blue cheese soup" and I'm not a big fan of the stinky blue cheese. And the mains didn't feature anything "interesting" vego ... I thought to myself, "am going to make do with a BIG bowl of the soup", which I know from memory I wouldn't like it or do I settle for a pumpkin and goats cheese salad, which, to me, even the name doesn't sound any appetizing ...

But I was very surprised when the soup arrived - it smelled nothing like stinky blue cheese and was tasty :)

So the kind FA brought me another small serving when she saw me gulp down the soup like a hungry man :)

Followed by some pumpkin, goats cheese salad - all good so far

Now, for the desserts the option was the cheese platter or ice cream. Something in me leaned more towards the cheese plate - MISTAKE!! I didn't like any of the cheeses - had brie, blue cheese, dried apple (1 slice) and handful hazelnuts ... I took one bite of the brie and I was done! gulped down the dessert wine and drifted into sleep :)

I will post pics of the meals and menu shortly

on ADL trip over long weekend Risky Business one way, and a very delightful Victorian Pinot Gris on the return (I forget the label).

touch wood have not seen Shaw & Smith for some time. Please may it stay that way :D

Slightly OT, do we have a thread for food & wine pairing on AFF ? If yes, can someone point me to that thread.

Menu change tomorrow for all International flights EX AUS excluding TAS/NOU/NAN.

As part of the centenary, some menus will feature a dish from historic menus, and the menu will show the original name of the dish, the flight and year it was served.
I hope to see a steak on offer when i fly BNE-AKL is a couple of weeks time.

You got a one in six (or is it four?) chance of getting a steak, to my best knowledge. Unfortunately, the one on the current menu rotation gets served with a slice of inedible pumpkin (bah) and tends to be served dry as a bone.

That same menu (if you happen to get this one out of however many it is) also has an Asian style pork stir fry which I would personally recommend way above that sad affair of a dry beef steak: It’s actually one of the best Qantas trans-Tasman meals out there in the moment I would say.

AKL-SYD, “lunch” flight on 787-900:

First time for me to take the Dreamliner across the Tasman and unfortunately, as others have mentioned before me, this means reduced service rather than anything special (though the seats are slightly wider and everything much newer so I’d still choose it over the rather old A330s to be honest).

Menu was the same for a third time this “season” (seasons are full 6 months in Qantas slightly distorted minds) and wasn’t really happy as it was hard enough to chose from this the first time as it’s full of fish which I can’t eat:

Meal service is very odd on this service and not in a good way: No pre-meal drinks offered and no meal orders taken beforehand. You rather are made to wait for about an hour and then the service itself is more akin Air New Zealand where they just bring the starters out on a trolly and make you select. Because of the long wait, I headed to the loo in between and happened to overhear the cabin crew totally losing it at the sight of those awful plastic packed Maggie Supermarket Beer pâtés in their trolly. The two men were quite obviously from the same rainbow coloured side of the fence as myself and therefore not surprisingly proved to have a little bit of taste. I mentioned that I had to endure these horrid plastic-pâtés twice before and the purser asked me how it was. I told him that it tastes as cheap and nasty as it looks, like straight from a supermarket shelf and both crew members just looked in disgust and muttered something about how horrendous they looked. Qantas- note, please note: Even your own crew is embarrassed about your food in Business class!

Later, the one lady who served Business together with the gay boys, profoundly apologised for the food quality and was nice enough to offer to bring a glass of champagne down to my poor partner who has to endure Cattle class which was a very nice gesture. After the Maggie Beer disaster which I won’t picture again (I have done so before- nothing to see, it’s a not so classy commercially packed plastic container), I got the lamb pie which was actually quite tasty. The main was also served pre-made “from the trolly” which just felt odd. It also came pre-decked on a tray with tablecloth rather than the proper restaurant-style table you usually get made individually. I also have no idea why they call the mushy peas “Italian braised” as they were even slightly minted so “English minty mush” would have been a much better term:

Still, good enough for a lunchtime feed. Luckily the staff was really charming and on the balls so they made my flight. But the actual service pattern on this aircraft and the always same old same old food- meh.
