I travelled AKL/SYD last week in J on the QF 787 (Dreamliner) flight. It was interesting to note that the flight featured an 'enhanced' meal service. Unfortunately, the menu was basically the same as the one I had the previous day flying SYD/AKL, which I haven't encountered before.
The enhanced 787 menu was specifically labelled as 'QF144 789' and was missing the usual main course options of the big bowl of soup and the cheese plate. There were no pre-meal drinks and the meal service started so quickly after departure that there wasn't even time to ask for one!
The meal service was done from a cart down the aisle for each course. No meal orders were taken prior to the service starting. The meal was then presented on a preset tray, similar to domestic J meals but with a linen tray liner. No tablecloth was placed on the table as with the normal J service.
I guess that this is done to speed up the meal service due to the large number of J seats on the 787. I don't know if premium economy got the same meal service as us in J, but it did seem more like an international premium economy meal service.
Overall, I would say that I preferred the A330 flight over to AKL the previous day.
