Qantas Business Class meals & menus

Pastie/pasty, pronounced as parstie when I lived in Adelaide many moons ago. We loved to call into the Balfours shop in the CBD (in King William Steet, an Adelaide institution) for our fresh hot “parsties”. Yum.

Edited

There is another definition of pasty in the LOTFAB :p

And Cornish pasties are supposed to be mainly root vegetables. When we make our own, we tend to stuff a lot more beef or lamb mince into them.

On a Bne to Adl flight tonight only 2 choices hot pork potatoes and red cabbage or cold salad. Only a Linda Ball no proper cake dessert. All wine refills had to be asked for but friendly service.

BNE-SYD, “dinner” flight on 737-800:

Short hop from Brissy and had plenty of time in the J lounge which allowed us to “full up” prior to the flight. On arrival at the gate, plane already quite full and most luggage compartments up the front already taken. We were struggling squeezing it all in there but the three flight attendants couldn’t be bothered to assist and rather ensured they greeted every frigging cattle class passenger individually than helping the passengers up the front.

After take off, the crew seemed to warm up and it all went the usual way. We were super lucky as the hot meal choice was pork with potatoes and yummie red cabbage- excellent choice if you ask me! The pork itself was a rather cheap cut but not too dry and filling. Adding some fresh spring onions on top separately was a very nice touch but unfortunately no proper desert, just a Lind ball and choice of Shiraz or Riesling. I’m really missing good Aussie Rieslings as the same variety tends to be disgustingly sweet in New Zealand for some reason (some really expensive versions from Central Otago excepted) and the offer on this flight certainly didn’t disappoint.

Plenty of refills were granted but only after asking every single time. As always with those short Aussie hops, the flight was over before you knew it and off we went on our way.

A few weeks late in posting, but here's dinner on QF842 from SYD-DRW over the Easter long weekend.

Hot meal choice was pork sausages served with peas and mashed potatoes. I was in 1A so got my first choice, it was a full flight so not sure how those in Row 3 fared. Served with sourdough, a tea cake and the obligatory Lindor ball. Very happy with the meal and was quite full afterwards, especially since I had already enjoyed dinner in the J lounge.

Sparkling water offered with the meal and FA was excellent with top ups on the red wine. After the dinner service some nuts were offered with drinks and closer to arrival in Darwin an ice cream was served. Unfortunately no photo of the ice cream as the cabin lights were dimmed at this point on this evening flight.

All in all a thoroughly enjoyable flight and a great start to my holiday. Got an excellent deal on the fare and was well worth it for the price paid! I will share the return journey in a separate post.

...and here's the return QF841 from DRW-SYD.

Was glad to have the Qantas Club in Darwin open again so enjoyed a light snack there before having lunch on the plane.

The hot option was chicken with polenta and green beans. Again in Seat 1A so got my first choice, it was another full flight. Served with sourdough, a chocolate cake and Lindor ball. Still water was already included on the tray so didn't bother asking for sparkling.

Service was good but not *as* good as the outbound flight, had to request a top up on the wine. Shortly before arrival in Sydney we were served a large tropical mango and passionfruit cookie from Byron Bay Cookies.

SYD-BNE tonight, lamb pie, deconstructed, essentially a nice stew with peas with a flaky pastry hat; alongside mash that had the fine consistency of Deb, but obviously much tastier. I thoroughly enjoyed it, sorry for the blue light, I should have turned on my overhead light . The alternative was a salad, apparently not many loaded, as there was only one left up to 2D. Crew was excellent, we had about 10 minutes of turbulence that upset service, but the cabin manager smashed it out after resumption of service and even offered a refill without asking.

MEL-ADL refreshment flight, choice of beef and Guinness pie or quinoa with roasted veg. Pie was tasty though not as hot as it could have been, and no sauce provided. Red wine option was decent. Crew made sure to minimise what was handed to me given I had a sleeping baby on my lap, so no tray, just the plate and gaksses of water and wine.

That's essentially a Y meal. I've literally had that a few years ago on a domestic flight in Y, served in a box. While visually unappealing, it was very tasty.

Agree, it definitely hit the spot, very tasty. Not sure what Y was munching on.

I flew Cairns to Brisbane 4 May on QF 719 departing 1810

No photos of meals on offer ( injured camera !) but some comments .

The offers were a spicy brisket ( said to be ok by my partner ) and chicken with polenta ( I had this – edible but sloppy and tasteless)

I was looking forward to a decent wine ( yes I know what you are thinking !) but the options were a Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir – quite drinkable

or

a “Red Claw” pinot gris” – tasted like petrol – maybe some of the bottle’s contents had been used on the previous service some and av gas vapour from refuelling had entered the cabin and flavoured the drink – half joking here!

My biggest impression on the flight was the outstanding service provided to two men I assume were off duty Qantas employees in the second row of Business – their conversation with crew ( which went on and on ) referred to QF rosters , Covid A and their jobs , boss issues etc (hence I made that assumption). I’ve no idea whether they were upgraded but there were 2 unoccupied J seats on the seat map 6 hours pre departure and J was full on take-off.

They sure received preferential service compared to the rest of us punters up front .

Surely, you say, I jest

Well, a minute or so after the seat belt sign goes off , one of the guys goes to the Purser looking after the J cabin , chats for a few minutes and goes back to his seat, and surprise surprise , the attendant promptly brings two trays to their seats each containing a snack , small bottle of Grant Burge Sparkline Wine and a glass . Ten minutes later, the pre meal drinks service starts for the rest of the J cabin.

The meal service started and got to the two and then it stopped while they chatted about “things” for 5-10 minutes with the Purser while the rest of us waited!

Not a good look!

The final insult was round the start of descent , I thought I could do with a glass of Bubbly and asked this of a female FA who was helping cleaning up the cabin – sorry, it’s too late , we’ll be landing soon! That’s fair enough. Then one of the guys went to the galley , spoke to someone, and out comes the Purser with 2 plastic glasses of what I assume was the Grant Burge for them.

To be fair , the trip was otherwise ok but I really hope we don’t go back to the days when the crew fawns over off duty colleagues and offers attention and service beyond what paying customers receive.

If it were me I would provide the feedback to Qantas including the seat numbers of the two staff. Declining beverage service to a paying passenger but then proceeding to serve staff is not on.

(I wouldn't bother mentioning the PDB bit, it's annoying but the line on that is a little more blurred)

BNE - SYD Friday 30 April.
Catering fail and late departure (after 5pm).
I should have known this flight was doomed. My 15.10pm flight was cancelled two days before, and was changed to the 17:10. Looked and there was a 16:40 flight available as well, so called and got put on that. No other flights in between.
Arrived at the airport to discover that the 16:10 had been re-instated, but no time to change.
The supposed 16:40 then has a gate change (in actual fact, the scheduled aircraft has been repurposed to fly to ADL instead, and we have to wait for a late arriving plane to be used for the SYD service.
Eventual push back about 17:15.
After take-off, then find out that due to the substituted plane, and late departure, there has been no J catering loaded! So this was the J catering for a 17:15 departure.
