Qantas direct flight from Lima to Brisbane April 13th.

Hi,

Qantas is flying direct between Peru and Australia next week for a repatriation flight
and I'm curious any airlines have flown direct before.

Probably not. Though distance wise it is now possible, per GCMAP:
LIM-SYD 7960 miles BNE 8120 miles
PER-LHR 9009 miles

Both too far to be wandering (non-stop)

Hi Op, where do you get your info from? My doubt is that even if an airline says they are travelling "A to B", sometimes they also stop at C (Santiago in this case)

I was booking for a family member and the Qantas agent at the call centre said it was direct...
I have never heard of that, but maybe they are testing capabilities?

Wow! Can anyone suggest why inflight entertainment will be unavailable? Is it to protect staff from having to roam cabins helping people with any glitches??

It is to save cost at this time.. that's why
 
Qantas has turned off their IFE contract for the time being given the vast decline in services.

As well as paying for the content which at a guess would be on per aircraft/seat basis,
I'd assume there is also considerable staff time involved in setting up the monthly images and then distributing to each aircraft.
 
An Air Services Agreement was signed between Australia and Peru a few years ago, meaning regular commercial flights between the two countries are technically allowed (and there are now aircraft technically capable of doing this, such as the 787). But, to my knowledge, this would be the first non-stop flight to actually operate between Peru and Australia.

Sorry for being a bit short sighted, apart from visiting Machu Picchu, is there enough interest for a direct Syd / Mel - Lima flight in "normal" times? PS I have been to Lima , MP and Cusco before and whilst MP was my number 1 bucket list destination, I have no desire to return.
 
I wouldn't have thought so, but interesting there were enough Aussies stranded there to warrant a flight.

Of course 1 planeful doesn't really make for a regular route.

But there's endless opportunity for speculation, given no opportunity for actual travel right now.😐

There were enough Aussies in Peru to warrant 3 rescue flights, but this is mainly because the lockdown in Peru happened suddenly, and before all DFAT warnings, and most Australians that were in the country when it happened could not get a commercial flight out before the lockdown commenced (for various reasons). In most other countries, there was enough warning for people to get out before all commercial flights ceased.

That said, I have often wondered if Qantas couldn't fill a 787-9 from SYD to LIM 2-3 times per week. As well as Australians travelling to Peru, and vice versa, LATAM has a hub there and it would be a very convenient one-stop way to get to the top half of South America/central America.
 
How much does IFE actually cost for a flight?
They need to pay licensing fees for the content in the IFE system. Qantas would have accounts with bodies such as APRA AMCOS and/or Screenrights who take the license payments and disburse them among the copyright holders of the content with payments generally sent monthly or quarterly.

The amount of the license fee varies by type of license and the industry.
It's been a while since I looked at it in detail, when I did the basic license fees were based on the amount of floor space or the amount of speakers for retail and size of screens or amount of attendees for festivals.
For an airline, the fees are likely something like $0.000x per available seat mile for each flight with IFE available.
