QANTAS fears Middle Eastern airlines such as Emirates will boost their combined share of the lucrative business travel market between Australia and Europe to nearly 50 per cent within three years.

The airline's forecasts are contained in its application to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for an extension of its joint venture with British Airways on the so-called kangaroo route. It was last granted by the competition regulator in 2005.

To me, it would seem that if QF wants to keep its share to Europe , then they should offer more than 2 destinations . Airlines such as Emirates have a much better network for conenctions in Europe without having to cross Europe to get to UK/DE and then backtrack for a few hours

But thats the difficulty being an end-end carrier versus a hub.

Emirates pools traffic from Australia, NZ, Singapore, Thailand, etc... in Dubai and then offers connections to London, Rome, Paris etc....

Best Qantas can do is pool traffic frm Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Bris, Adelaide in either Singapore or BKK then onwards.
Hence just flights to London an Frankfurt and codeshare options (eg AF codeshare)

I agree with Dave - for many it's much more conevenient to go SYD (or MEL or BNE) - DXB - xx_ in europe than SYD-SIN-LHR-xx_ - one less stop, also a nice new airport to connect in with little delays etc.

QF just dont have as good options, and rely on their brand to fill the planes. They desperately need to expand their mini-hubs in SIN and HKG.

Bear in mind CX do fly to many destinations directly out of HKG so it's pretty simple to fly QF to HKG and connect onto CX (QF need to codeshare a few more ex-HKG flights into Europe in my opinion).

yes +1 . If you look at flight paths, HEL is almost enroute from HKG-LHR, and even if QF had a service that went HKG-HEL that connected nicely to codeshares in the AY network would be good without having to overfly most of Europe first before heading back ... and I hear HEL certainly does not live up to it's IATA code when it comes to connecting.

Actually CX do not fly to that many destinations in Europe. There's only LHR, FRA, CDG, FCO & AMS. QF already codeshare on CX to FCO, on AF to CDG and AMS is close enough to LHR not to bother with putting their code on the CX flight. Compare to even SQ (who have ZRH, ATH, MXP, BCN, CPH, MAN as well as the CX destinations) and then EK (who has a plethora of destinations too numerous to list). My bet is when the 787's are up and running we will be seeing some QF codes to some new destinations in Europe on direct flights ex-SIN .... on Jetstar metal....

You know, I think the old "hub and spoke" excuses have run their course. Goodness, Qantas could not even maintain a 3-weekly flight from SYD-BOM when they were the only carrier offering a non-stop flight between those countries.

Yes, HEL is a good connection point instead of LHR.

I have transited through Helsinki airport 3 times in the last 12 months and must say it is a real pleasure transiting through Helsinki. You can be on your next flight within 30 minutes of arrival - I have done this once and didn't feel rushed as I would in other airports.

Also, flying Finnair in Business Class is just lovely - the service (food, drinks, cabin staff ratio and attendiveness) comes very close to Qantas First (without slippers and PJs). Plus they don't fill their business cabin with upgraders so it isn't jammed full.

+1 on HEL. I had the quickest ever landing on the runway (when plane still in full trottle)->taxiway->parking at aerobridge gate->open doors for passenger exit = 90 seconds.

Plus their airport is modern, not that many people and is not complicated. However, most people would think HEL is too far out for transit, as they don't think in great circles, not to mention HEL is not well known as a very attractive city.

One thing I do know though, a lot of HKG tour groups use Finnair when organise European tours as it saves the group a lot of time going via HEL rathar than LHR.

Just like the EK offering to Europe, SQ provides much better generic single stop from the major cities in Aus to the major cities in India. (besides ths 3x weekly on any route is not going to be too desirable for business traffic, and given the large India population in MEL why not MEL-BOM???)

Yes I have used them a number of times into Europe.

Last year had to go into Budapest, a good connection.
This year to Lisbon, Mel-HGK-HEL-Lisbon and return for approx in J at $7000.
No Heathrow YES YES
