Latest points balance email has an interesting wrong example for using points of 8K for Brisbane - Melbourne in its announcement of a 2000 points off discount for classic awards in both economy and J!

Travel 1st Feb to March 31st with bookings up to 15th Feb.

I actually found that when booking a flight on Tuesday night down to Sydney from Brisbane.

6,000 points for BNE-SYD 2,000 off.

But the best part was the extra charges.

$11.77. no fuel fines but it seemed like something else was missing.

Hmm
Safety and Security Charge: 3.00
Passenger Service Charges
BNE: 3.17
SYD: 4.53

Total 10.70

GST on all that 1.07

Grand Total 11.77

QF Happier New Year Travel Sale

Just got an email from QF advertising a reduced redemption rate of 2000 points on flights.

What is interesting is the surcharge is $12.09 (MEL-SYD economy) or you can use 3,000 points.

My question is who would use 3,000 points for the sake of $12.09?

I received the email too; and I can generally get more than $45 value from 3,000 QFF points, so no I would not use point to pay a lessor amount.

You would be surprised how many people will pay a huge number of points to save a few measly bucks when the simplest mental arithmetic would tell you that it's much better value to use the points elsewhere. From an airline point of view it's great - burn off lots of points at very little cost. The way accounting works for points nowdays is that the airline recognises the revenue for points sold when the points are used, which could be years after the cash is handed over by the credit card company (which is typically settled a month after points are transferred).

Another example:

Perth-Broome
Current Classic Award level: 8,000
New Year Travel sale: 10,000

The economy perth to Broome sale fare won't attract too many with the points needed for the sale being 2000 more than the standard classic award
