we arrived home a couple of days ago from LAX ...

I'd already secured two Premium Economy seats using my ff points which i'd luckily found around a year ago and, about three or four months ago, I'd applied for an upgrade to business using my points, should it be available.
so, with fingers firmly crossed, I checked my flights the day before, and to my relief and delight we got the upgrade....YAY!

this was our first business class flight with Qantas and I was looking forward to it very much- and it did not disappoint in any way. also, first time flying on the upper level of a 747 which felt a bit odd to start with, but we soon got used to it.

the service, food, and the overall experience was brilliant and we arrived back in Australia the way you'd hope to arrive after a 15 1/2 hour flight on a flat bed- relaxed, and happy after a lot of sound sleep.

Rather than a 3 course meal at 1 or 2 am, as we've experienced on all other long haul flights in business, Qantas now has a 'supper menu' with items which can be ordered all throughout the night (so sad I slept most of the night so didn't get to try anything else after our first meal) but what we both had was totally delicious.
Breakfast was perfect also.

and, finally, why oh why have I always not bothered to take the pajamas offered on business class flights (on the other airlines) this time we decided to take them and they are absolutely fabulous - very cool and very comfy.

If only it were not so darn difficult to book Qantas J using ff points for flights departing Australia - they certainly do not make it easy but if you can snag a seat, it's SO worth the effort of searching

Thanks for posting and great to hear you enjoyed the experience. It's been a while but I remember enjoying the upper deck on a 747 -- negotiating the stairs down after little sleep and perhaps one too many scotches another story. The PJs are great too.

May I ask - when you say the menu was available throughout the flight - did the staff specifically state that was the case? I haven't heard that before on QF. If so, was it pre-order so they could set it aside?

Cheers.

The anytime serve has been on or off the menu over the years.

My own experience and other observations I have come across is that generally the FA's often discourage it.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I should have clarified - I've certainly been able to eat anything still available midway through the flight (in J) but never heard it proactively offered. Plus there are stories of pax being told only the asterisked items (sandwiches) being available later in the flight.

You got a points upgrade on an award booking? Congratulations on that alone!

The reason QF "makes it hard" is because there's a lot of PAID premium traffic on transpac routes - it's ALWAYS been difficult to secure upgrade (or award) space in premium cabins. This is QF doing its job to yield manage, and in the end it came through wwith the points upgrade on top of the award.

There was a time, years back, when QF released basically zero inventory in J/F on transpac.

In the end it worked out and you had a great flight, which is the main thing :)
