Hello everyone,

I am looking to book tickets on Qantas return SYD - LON for myself, child and husband. I will travel out with our child first and my husband will come later. Then we will all fly back together.

Understand I need to book a separate ticket for my husband for this and try to get seats together on the return flight.

I would like to know - can I book the ticket for my husband through my Qantas FF account, and use my points to request an upgrade for him? I have all the points in my account and I know this would be straightforward if we were all on the same ticket but not sure how it works when we aren't on the same ticket.

Thanks very much for your help!

Indeed.

If you navigate to "Your Bookings" you'll find a little box at the bottom of the page allowing you to do exactly that.

You can also call QFF and see if the bookings can be linked. Will increase the chances of you all sitting together for the return leg.

Great, that's very helpful.

Would you say premium economy in Qantas is worth paying for for syd to lon? I can book an economy saver fare and request an upgrade, but not sure of the chances as the PE cabin on that route looks quite small.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Two comments -

first, PE is IMHO so much better than economy it is worth it - but look around at pricings as it may be an even better option J on some of the cheaper carriers (eg Qatar)

second, regarding upgrades for family members, I think it is fine to request an upgrade for your husband even though he is not flying with you/on same ticket, but his chances of upgrade would be based on his, not your status, if that makes a difference? (Unless you are P1 - then your status is taken into account)

"Worth paying for" is purely subjective. It's worth paying for at the right price point. The product is good but not worth QFs aspirations of near J pricing at times. Sub 4k and I wouldn't hesitate - 5.5k or more and pay the extra for another airline's J product.
Timing is everything when it comes to upgrades. QF crews say loads have been light recently but then i traveled during school holidays and it was packed. Others will point you to EF to understand loads and upgrade chances. Last time i paid for PE it was less than 4k and it was half empty.

I am not certain but linking bookings may not be possible once interline changes come into effect from 01 September 2016.

I believe that the reference is to linking the different pax as a TCP, not linking the separate airline tickets together. I don't see why this would change with the new interline policy

The reference that Qantas won't link separate Qantas bookings for the same person post 01 September 2016 makes me think they won't link bookings for separatel people either. I am sure it's mentioned in the other thread regarding information segments unless I am misunderstanding the changes.

The new changes you are referring to relate to the interline policy. Adding a TCP is a totally separate action as it lets QF know that the pax on each booking are traveling together. Nothing to do with interlining bags on separate tickets.

TCP's (total complete party) notification is nothing to do with ghost/GK info segments for flights.

It's an entry put elsewhere in the pnr that allows enables staff who edit the flight to retrieve pax names on that flight who are in separate bookings that are TCPd. This is visible in Altea around T-80 when passenger names migrate from the reservations system to the checkin system.
