On their website, says total size of checked baggage in one place for domestic travel is 55 and another place says 54. which is correct? If bag is larger, can you pay extra, or won't they take the bag?

It’s probably not ever suppose to be over 32 Kg( one suitcase) however be safe and print the page out where it says the luggage is 55 KG as proof.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Where does it say either 54 or 55 kg?

Also there is no U in Qantas.

Not weight - OP is talking about total dimensions - which are quoted as 55inches.

Can't find the reference to 54inches, but as QF is Australian, and hence metric, then the 140 centimetres is what will apply

Hi @Fern and welcome to AFF :)

The total dimension of each piece of checked luggage for domestic travel must not exceed 55 inches (140cm). The weight of each piece of checked luggage varies by the cabin in which you're flying, your Qantas status and aircraft flown.

If the bag is only slightly larger in total dimensions it is unlikely to matter. I certainly can't look at a bag and tell you whether it's 55" or 58" total..... and I bet your average check in agent can't either.... If it is noticeably larger and IS noticed then yes you can pay an oversize fee....

But will the self check systems be able to accurately measure, and thus force you to pay?

Never seen any suitcase too large as in diameter. Checkin agents don't have tape measures.

What sectors are you flying ie to/from the US or elsewhere?

Sydney to Melbourne to Cairns to Sydney

Assuming you have no QF frequent or One World tier status allowing extra baggage you would get one piece up to 23 kilos. There is a heavy charge of AUD50.00 if your bag is 24-32 kg.

If you need an extra bag it's cheaper to pre-pay online as the cost at the airport is AUD78.00.

This is for QF operated flights eg QF419 SYD/MEL, QF925 CNS/SYD.

Check your itinerary carefully because if your flight number is JQxx_ or a QF codeshare flight QF5xx_ it will be operated by Jetstar.

I have only travelled once with an oversized bag... actually a cardboard box totalling 68"..... I made a loop of rope, placed that around it to make "handles" sticking up at the top.. and duct taped it down - it was way too awkward to try to carry otherwise. The check in agent took a long cool look at it (so I thought I was going to get hit with the oversize fee - fair enough!) then suddenly grinned and exclaimed "you put HANDLES on it!" and checked it in..... lol

at 55" I doubt anyone is ever going to measure if it is 54 or 55. I think the only time this applies is when it is ridiculously over, so there needs to be a definitive cut-off on sizing. At 140cm baggage handling machinery is unlikely to measure it in any other way than 'can it get through this gap'. Let's call it bump measuring. Longer items than can safely handled on the conveyers are likely to be carted by hand.

So I wouldn't worry. But man... I want to see a 55" tall case. Do you play double bass?

Hi those in the know. I am about to face the same issue with a piece of luggage that is lighter than my 23kg allowance but is 90cm x 90cm x 15 cm. I'm going around in circles trying to find reference to an oversize fee on the Qantas website. I'm travelling Melbourne to Mt Isa and I need to determine how I get it checked in- or whether the cost exceeds my need to take it altogether. Confused between excess luggage as its not a weight issue. Advice appreciated

Wouldn't that just go in as a piece of luggage, checked in through the over-sized baggage counter? I.e. it's counted as a part of your normal luggage allowance.
At least in Sydney they usually expect you to have the bag already tagged before taking it to the counter.

Based on personal experience, even if you are out a couple of cm bag dimension wise or 1-2 kg weight wise, they will let it slide as long as you are not being an a** to the check in person.
