Qantas, BA Avios and AA Points

I know this may seem like a weird questions to ask but I think this is the right place.

I am going on a trip to Australia all on Qantas with the following flight pairs, I am looking to maximize points so I was looking into the Chase BA Card. I am enrolled in the AA but do not have status. I don't usually fly American in the US but do fly to Europe at least once a year. What would be the best suggested method to maximize points. I have a chase already so it would be a product change which I am willing to do.

It would be handy to know the fare class of the Y sectors as the number of points earned to AA and QF will be affected depending on the fare class.
 
Agree, need to know the fare class. AA will probably end up earning the fewest points but these will almost certainly be more valuable when redeemed than QF points. Avios can be useful for expensive short Y trips in the US
 
Well in that case you'll earn around 32881 points crediting to AA and crediting to QF will get you 36,100 points. BA are absolute rubbish to credit N class fares to when flying on QF, and overall for this trip you'll earn 21342 Avios.

This will earn you enough Status Credits with QF to reach Silver status, crediting to BA will give you enough Tier Points for Bronze (after flying with BA twice) or if crediting to AA this will be enough EQMs to qualify for Gold status (after flying with AA 4 times). All three are equivalent to One World Ruby, in other words equal level in status. Judging by the fact you're based out of the USA crediting to AA for the AA status will be of much better use, not to mention the points earned to AA is worth more and spent more easily than QF. The points earned to BA may be significantly lower but if you travel on BA frequently or earn a lot of Avios through your CC usage, crediting to BA may not be such a bad idea.

This is all assuming you're on QF18 JFK-xLAX-SYD and QF15 BNE-LAX transferring to QF11 LAX-JFK and that you do not have status with QF, AA, or BA. Also assuming DRW-ASP is by other means than flying on QF.

Yes taking the Ghan DRW-ASP, for the flying with AA at least 4 times do the code share flights count for this trip? Or I do I have to fly 4 AA flights prior to this trip?

e.g. N class on an AA Flight number on QF metal can earn twice as many RDM (redeemable miles) than taking the same flight again in N class but with a QF flight number.

Travel on miles earning AA flight numbers count toward the four, regardless of operating carrier.

I cannot book the flights from JFK-SYD and BNE-JFK from AA as AA does not sell premium economy. Would Qantas sell me tickets on those flights but put it as the AA flight #?

I don't think booking the dom AUS fares on AA code in N bucket will earn twice as many points. My understanding from the AA tables is that EQM is double but EQP is still the same at 50%.

The difference here would be the flights would then count towards the 4 AA segments required for status.
 
If you enrol in the AA platinum challenge the first PE trip will be enough to qualify as Qantas is a participant for challenges. Something to consider for approx USD 200.

QF Flight number in N class when credited to AAdvantage earns 50% RDM based on miles traveled; EQP's are based on RDM earn at a rate of 50%, so EQP earn is 25% of miles travelled..

E.g MEL-SYD at 439 miles. (No status)

AA flight number, RDM earn is 439 and EQP earn is 220.
QF Flight number, RDM earn is 220 and EQP earn is 110.

(FWIW, the same QF flight in Q class earns 110 RDM & 55 EQP's.)

The AA flight numbers certainly count toward the 4 (FWIW, reports on FT are that AA metal also counts, even if not on an AA flight number.)
