Qantas and China Southern have signed their first reciprocal codeshare agreement, which will significantly improve travel options for Qantas customers and open up new tourism opportunities for Australia.

Under the deal, Qantas customers will be able to book on China Southern services from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth to Guangzhou – China’s third largest city and its biggest transport hub – as well as four onward destinations within China.

In turn, China Southern customers will be able to book on 10 different Qantas routes within Australia and to New Zealand – a move designed to make it easier for Chinese travellers to visit more cities.

Pretty limited set of cities.

Guangzhou – Xiamen, Kunming, Fuzhou, Ürümqi

Interesting that MU (China Eastern flies) to all of the above, so presumably they are currently reachable via PVG (Shanghai)

Dragonair, Cathay's regional affiliate, also reach all of these cities except for Urumqi. More evidence of discord between the supposed OW 'partners'?

QF should be flying to more Chinese cities than PVG and HKG. If AY can make Chongqing work QF can and should do better.

Yes, QF sent out an email today....

Can't say I'm suddenly going to step onto a China Southern aircraft soon. In fact I can say I won't be stepping onto a China Souther plane.

Qantas codeshare with China Southern

An article in the Sydney Morning Herald is stating that Qantas has signed a code share with China Southern for flights within China. How does this work with their code share with China Eastern as well.

Qantas, China Southern forge code-share deal

Qantas has forged a code-share deal with Asia's largest airline, China Southern, as both carriers seek to funnel more passengers from Australia and China onto their respective networks.

Re: Qantas codeshare with China Southern

You've got to wonder whether QF are working to a plan or just making it up as they go along.

If there is a plan, it's my guess than it involves winding down QFi to the bare essentials (they have to use the A380's) but otherwise rely on code shares i.e., a glorified travel agent.

When your cost base is so much higher, particularly versus the Chinese airlines, clipping the ticket thanks to your frequent flyer scheme does seem the way to go. Sad but I can't see Qantas ever paying it's pilots and fa's what China Southern undoubtedly does

Wonder what their prices to Europe are and whether it could result in some cheaper SCs for all the status chasers???

"Qantas has forged a code-share deal with Asia's largest airline, China Southern, as both carriers seek to funnel more passengers from Australia and China onto their respective networks."

Given China Southern consistently has the cheapest fares to Europe (ex-flyscoot/airasia+other) this is pretty big news.

Also the brand new A380's are pretty fantastic I hear

Qantas have, for a number of years, undertaken significant cost cutting - each time stating that it needed to do so in order to compete. In the words of my 3 yo grand-daughter "are we there yet?".

Highly unlikely. The statement says nothing beyond the four cities, it's not like China Southern are joining oneWorld - so SCs to Europe? I wouldn't be holding my breath.

According to wikipedia, MU does all those cities from PVG and indeed have competitors on all those routes. They're all pretty major cities in China. Definitely not bush bashing. I'd be more impressed if northern China got more of a look in, myself.

That said, one reason may be that Xiamen, Kunming and Fuzhou would all involve backtracking if transiting at PVG. Urumqi is a slightly odd addition though.

QF should start a CAN service and revenue share with CZ to make this a more equal venture.

Why is that sad? I wouldn't want to earn what my Chinese counterparts earn and neither would most Australians.

I would prefer to increase the Chinese standard of living rather than reduce ours.

So you've taken a pay cut an earn what your Chinese equivalent earns? I don't think you have have you.

Bam1748,
I haven't and that's why I said "sad". But it's the same reason no international cargo ships carry the Australian flag and went we have hardly any manufacturing left in this country. There are positive consequences of this of course but we also need to accept the negative ones - that we will struggle to be competitive in low margin commodity style industries
