Applicable to 30 domestic NZ services and 85 domestic AU services (no trans-tasman services included).

Details on codeshare partnership:
  • Will commence on October 28, the same day that the Air NZ/VA agreement is due to expire.
  • Codeshare bookings will be available from the end of July
  • Reciprocal lounge status as well as the ability to earn points/status credits
Partnership possibilities for the future include biofuels, freight and ground-handling - to potentially be explored by the airlines

Wow, this is a big move! Great for avoiding JQ on domestic flights in NZ.

If I go to New Zealand I may try Air New Zealand flights if the codeshare applies to a route I'd want to fly on. This is exciting news!

Wow! Just wow! I hate JQ domestic NZ flights almost as much as I enjoy NZ domestic flights (for what they are). The lounges are pretty reasonable as well. This is awesome news! Tut tut, VA.

Sounds like pretty much most of each other’s Dom networks ,excluding TT

Quite a boost for Star Alliance - their global network map now covers Australia. Probably more significant for global travelers than OneWorld accessing NZ.

Not at all. Star alliance operates almost exclusively on the basis of operating carriers. Star alliance gold members travelling on NZ codeshares operated by QF will get nothing - no points, no lounge access, no elite status miles and no priority anything. NZ members may get benefits, but members of other star alliance programs will not.

Come to think it isn't that also the way oneworld operates (with the exception of points and status accrual)? Generally, a oneworld member travelling on QF codeshare on China Eastern or Emirates get no in flight or at airport benefits either (with maybe a couple of exceptions to this rule).

Was on a domestic Air NZ flight today and it was mentioned by the crew as an exciting new future initiative. I was totally bemused until just reading this thread.

Not that I needed it today but reciprocal rights including lounge access would certainly be handy.
