Soon in Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland (followed by Wellington and Brisbane) you will see the introduction of Q card readers for travel across the tasman.

They are similar to the Q card readers for domestic flights. You simply tap to check in then scan your Australian or New Zealand passport at the reader. A boarding pass will be printed and if you have bags that need to be checked in you can use a dedicated counter to drop it off.

If you're entitled to use the express path lane in Australia, the express path logo will be printed on your boarding pass.

I guess this is good. I only have a a couple at most flights TT per year so I guess this will replace using F check in.

Yuck......

Why is this a bad thing?

Is there a source or reference point to confirm OP's claim?

If accurate as posted, I personally think it's a good idea. Automates and reduces the time taken to get past check-in/security for trans-tasman flights.

And if they could only integrate the Smartgate ticket issuance into that station as well, and it would be a one-stop shop.

The OP works in the airline industry ...

As I posted recently; smartgate for emigration ex Oz for Oz PP holders would be good (like they have in NZ).

Good provided it's not the only way to check in for a TT flight...

The Q card reader is in addition to the other methods of check in. The Q card reader can only be used by Frequent Flyers.

Nice to have the option, and hand luggage only, it sounds quite attractive. I guess, if having luggage to check, the length of the queue(s) for the dedicated bag drop is going to be a major determinant as to whether to use it or use conventional priority check in (I suspect F check-in - SYD/MEL only - would usually win out here. J not so clear cut, but I guess it remains to be seen).

For those people who like to do such things, using Q Card reader would remove the option to 'save' express lane cards for a 'rainy day' or for friends who are not entitled to use them.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

For arrivals in NZ or outbound Aus?

Didn't think smart gates are available for use for departures in Australia? Will be good if they ever do get around to introducing them for departures.

I'm inferring from the OP's wording that you have to have a NZ or Aust PP to take advantage of this? If you have any other kind of PP you can't use it?

Cheers
