My partner and I are planning our first trip to the USA. Planning to be there in Aug/Sept. Most of the accommodation and flight promotions are for travel up to 31 March. Not sure if we should wait to see if flights and accommodation will get cheaper - can anyone advise when (or if) hotels and airlines will start advertising promotions for travel around aug/sept?

Any help would be most appreciated,
TN

August/September is right in the middle of peak season for US travel so promotions are going to be pretty hard to find.
(And seats fill quite fast in my experience)

$1600 return economy SYD-LAX is probably about the cheapest i've seen it during peak season.

Last year, I bought my flights for Aug/Sept in mid-February, and paid $1800 to get to New York and back....

I brought my tickets - BNE - DFW return for August on QF for $1300................but these were on special and sold to me in October 2011. It is summer there and is peak....I use website Cheap Flights and Sale Airfares | GetFlight.com.au and this emails me flight sales

Nice link. Thanks for posting. Will check it out for PER-EWR for May on Qantas.

Edit: Dang that GetFlight.com.au site is awesome, so easy and intuitive. If only more websites were so simple.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

AFF Supporters can remove this and all advertisements

nice link !! but why wont it give me flights from Sing to Europe ? but will give me flights from Mel to Europe ?

Do you have QFF points?
And where are you located?
There are Classic Award flights offering in that period, MEL-LAX, for example.

Air NZ just released flights - for aug/sept - BNE to SFO for $1790 and LAS for $1790.

Get flights is an Aussie based site - I have only used it for flights departing Oz. However you can find flights out of Singapore - got to the top right corner where it has the Australian flag and country code as Australia - change it to Singapore - which is there only other country at the present time but I hope they expand. The Singapore site is very basic - no europe fares yet. It is based on price I have not seen anywhere to put in class

Many accommodation contract prices expire on 31 march throughout the industry. So close to that time is when new rates are given out. As we all know there are also short term "specials" from time to time and there is no way of guessing when these will occur or even if they will.

Demand ex Australia to the USA is high due to currency exchange rates and in peak season seats of the most desirable flights can be scarce. Consider whether its worthwhile putting a desposit down and booking your preferred flights early vs waiting and taking your chances later :)

Flight Centre have a Nth America Travel Expo late June every year (late June in Syd,weekends around this time in other cities).
if you can wait until then, and are flexible around your aug/sep departure you will find some dedcent fares available at the expo only.

I bought SYD-LAX for this aug for $1348 QF (Air NZ was going for $1050 and V-Aust $1250) at flight centre global travel expo a few weeks ago.
People always seem to say aug/sept is 'peak' travel period to usa and no good fares are to be had,but I have travelled there a few times at this time of year over the last few years and always managed to get a very decent fare.
the expos are your friend!

I'm looking for flights in August too, and there's a sale on now with Qantas if booked by 21 Mar 2012 - Flights from Melbourne to Los Angeles $1,299 return from 18 Jul - 10 Sep 2012, or to NYC at $1535. I've even been able to price a multi-city booking to NYC then return home from San Fran and it comes to $1505 inclusive of surcharges, fees and taxes but excluding the card payments fee ($30.00 per passenger).

That's an excellent price IMO :)

Yes I was originally intending to go with the US Dividend Miles offer as a treat to myself and fly in J, but when compared with the cash cost vs buying the flights directly (albeit in Y), not to mention the time saving of a direct MEL-LAX then onwards to JFK/SFO vs transiting via Asia, I opted for this Qantas deal instead. Oh well, no lounge access and Y seat only, but at least it's an A380 Y seat! :)

Thanks for passing on the msg Holly. I booked a trip for Aug/Sept on Sunday, SYD-LAX-SFO then NYC-SYD for $1505... only gap is to get from SFO-NYC, which I will probably do on Virgin America.

A friend recommended Southwest airlines. I checked online and from New York (LaGuardia; LGA Airport) to SFO with one stop was US$171-$250, including taxes AND 2 checked bags! Lots of flight in one day so I'm not in a rush yet to lock anything in. Worth checking out.
