Has anyone here used Priceline.com's "Name Your Own Price" service to book hotels in USA?

We're going to NYC in November and was going to try this for 4* accommodation in Jersey City, which is just over the river. Have read some good reviews on the potential properties. Just interested to hear any Aussies feedback, plenty out there from the yanks.

Thanks.

Haven't used it for the USA but have plenty of experience with it otherwise, try betterbidding.com to narrow down which property it could be..

Thanks Zainman. Plenty of reviews for/against, I guess it's the old of "you get what you pay for".

We used Priceline in the US in 2010 with no problems. As per advice by Zainman we used betterbidding and the like & we were pretty confident we had narrowed down the possibilities. We saved good money & there certainly was no discrimination against us in the allocation of noisy rooms etc

ive used it just shy of 35 times in the US & Canada - it's actually now my preferred method of booking hotels in North America... mostly for the "fun" of it being lucky dip.

in manhattan ive used it 5 times:

  • 3.5* Doubletree Metropolitan Hotel New York City @ USD$155/night
  • 3.5* Hudson, A Morgans Original @ USD$173/night
  • 4* The Shoreham Hotel @ USD$303/night (new years eve)
  • 3.5* Affinia Manhattan @ USD$147/night
  • 3.5* Hudson, A Morgans Original @ USD$149/night

I have used Priceline a few times, won the hotel I was "aiming" or "hoping" for. I prefer to use Hotwire which is similar but the prices are offered, rather than having to bid as PL. As mentioned, use Priceline and Hotwire Forum to help you identify or narrow down the potential properties. Also you can use tripadvisor to try and "match" the ammenities that PL/HW offers, its pretty accurate I think. My previous Hotwire includes Westin Paris, Westin Venice, Hilton Prague, Sheraton Waikiki, Movenpick Resort Cebu, Westin Grand Frankfurt, and a few more. My username is Alanslegal80 on betterbidding so feel free to check out my posts there on what successes possible.

Well, no joy for me....

I am looking at Jersey City/Hoboken, just across the Hudson, and can't get a good deal. Tried up to AUD$120 and no bites.... The avg was around $253, and they say "Save up to 60%" and I am well over that, so it's likely why...

We already have a booking in Long Island City at the 3* Fairfield Inn (Marriott Chain) Manhattan View. Rate of USD$111 per night + taxes via their Price Match Guarantee (Match and beat by 25%). The only catch is that this particular Hotel is in the middle of an Industrial type area with little to nothing nearby. For us it doesn't really matter that much, because we get in before dark most times anyway.

Thanks to all who replied on here, better luck next time I guess :)

Not on priceline but we stayed at this place in Jersey City. We had the suite with the NYC skyline.
WELCOME

I have used it a couple of times, both for Australia and the USA. You can quite easily work out which hotel you are bidding for based on the description. I got Stamford in Melbourne for $120 and the Plaza in NYC for $600
