Is it still possible or not to earn status credit while using frequent flyer points to make bookings.

As per above post yes I think you can under Points and Pay, but it appears, at least in my very limited knowledge of it, to be dreadful value for your points/cash for the number of SCs earned. Once upon a time, in a land far far away, things called mASAs existed (where m = Y, J, F - for economy, business, first), where you earned 'full' SCs for usually a very small premium over normal 'classic' award flights. But they were fabulous things that knowledgeable Qantas FFs loved, so Qantas in their infinite wisdom whisked them away from us. I still miss them. :(

Perhaps better value if you book return travel oneway using points and the other with cash (for OS travel where you can not book cheap oneway sectors). This allows to burn some / earn some on a return trip. Particularly good if you snag a good J sale fare mixed with a J award seat. eg on a $4500 sale fare to SFO, you could do the return trip for about $2200 + 96000 pts. You earn 180 SCs plus points for the paid sector.

Could also be handy for travel over status years when you have already requalified and using points is a good use of travelling time.

QF also do have the odd promotion for Classic Rewards (usually in economY) that earn SC's but you have to watch for them. Otherwise Points+Pay is the other way to use mostly points and still earn SC's.

One of the tricks with "points and pay" is to
1. find a really good SALE fare
2. Determine the points and cash cost of a classic reward on the same route
3. When matching the classic reward cash cost, will you use fewer points (PnP) with the sale fare? (plus earn a few points and SC)

Yes it does happen...

Great tip. Definitely working for whY on a current Asia sale fare - saving of about 6k points on a return trip plus earning SCs! Not working for J - but the sale fares in J aint that great.

I'll be peeved with myself if that was an option for J fares to JNB booked a few months back (it was super cheap)....

Yes if on the ball, last time I booked a ticket I found a domestic points plus pay that was $1 dollar cheaper than classic rewards plus 'fee'.
