Everyone who returns home to Australia will be quarantined in hotels for two weeks
The PM says that it won't matter where you live, everyone who returns from overseas will spend two weeks in quarantine. If someone lives in Tasmania, but returns to Australia through Melbourne, that traveller will have to stay in Melbourne for two weeks.

He says the new measures will be enforced by Australia's state and territory governments.

Defence force personnel will be brought in to support state and territory police to monitor people self-isolating.

The new rules begin at 11:59pm tomorrow.

Will the traveller be picking up the bill for this not only for the accomodation, what about meal costs and incidentals. This will blow some peoples budgets and what if they cannot afford to pay the cost.

That's good to know I will take a suite at the Sydney Hilton that will help retain the status. Wait there is a flaw in my plan, I am not allowed to leave the country and Hilton have already extended status. ;) :)

And don't forget to order everything off the in room dining menu during the 14 days. :D

Thoughts- it should have been the case from the beginning if we were serious. Inconvenient? Absolutely. But restrictions on movement, including transit from international, have been at least a fortnight behind where they should have been.

If its like other countries that have done this, unless there is an allergy requirement, everyone gets the same predetermined low cost meal - no menu.
That is also good to know I do have allergies, I am allergic to low cost meals. ;) :D I stay at the Hilton enough I can now confidently order meals from the TV, well to be completely honest my daughter showed me how that works and so now there is no need to call magic unless I need an ice bucket.

He trusted that people would follow the rules. Many did. Sadly it's the well, won't swear, who mucked it for everyone else.

But at the start of this problem there were approx 50000 air arrivals per day plus the thousands on ships.
Now in 2016 Australia passed 100000 hotel rooms with that predicted to rise to 130000 in 2021.
I hazard a guess that we would have run out of hotel rooms along with detention centres and old mining camps.

As the PM said in his press conference arrivals are now at a level where this can be done.

Earlier border closure to non-citizens and non permanent residents would have reduced arrivals to a manageable number far sooner

Yes, I would say that they are mostly already here. Not many still to arrive as there will be increasing difficulties in finding transportation.

I thought you were confined to the DPRSA?

This is the best decision they have made in a while judging by the number of cases directly linked to returning Australians and other incoming passengers both flying in and from the cruise ships. A few people - but obviously not AFFers - have made these measures necessary by providing false addresses, attending parties the day after returning and generally going about their normal activities while supposedly self-isolating.

I know a lot of 'holes in the system' have been previously been pointed out on these forums and hotel capacity would have been an issue while the numbers were greater but, I cannot believe what has happened to Border Force (and PD) during all this. A lot of finger pointing at the States but where have the temperature checks been and proper marshaling of incoming passengers at the airport? If Christmas Island and the Darwin camp were good enough for passengers from Wuhan and the Diamond Princess, why not for all returning passengers? We are still playing catch-up, it seems to me.

Hundreds still in Sth America alone apparently - likely to be the next wave of charter repatriation flights

Yep, and I they run out of room at Quokkaville for ship passengers then transfer them to the NT mining camp already paid for, set up, experienced, and ready to go.

296,000 hotel rooms in Oz may cover that. 😉

Earlier border closure

'Beginning' ... 'earlier' . OK, when should they have done it? Late December? Mid January? Early February? I had a quick look back and can't see anyone advocating anything like this back then

Apologies - I don't mean to have a go at you flydoc, your comments are as good as the next one, but AFF is just saturated with "they should have done it earlier" comments, none that I can recall earlier than mid March.
