To all the newly-minted Platinum One frequent flyers out there... I'm curious to hear... what's been your experience so far?

Anything different?

Free upgrades?

... or all hype?

Upgrades at the gate aren't always smooth either. A few weeks ago at LHR I had been upgraded to F between check-in and reaching the gate (as seen on manage my booking) but had to wait 15 minutes at the gate because the gate staff thought I'd been offloaded from the flight.
Op up or points upgrade?

Not doubting you, but how does a points upgrade materialise between check-in and the gate? EDIT: D'oh! See post below :)

I had a similar experience a couple of years back. Op-upped to F at check in (first time in years and years; very happy, Jan); red light and buzz at the gate - I wasn't on the manifest or whatever is checked when you scan at the gate. 20 mins wait until all had boarded and then sent to my original J seat.

I've gotten one a few times...the check box when requesting a points upgrade clearly states for solo travellers the option to receive an upgrade right until boarding.

My guess is once check in is closed any no shows are processed and seats can become available.

Ah, .. of course. An at-the-gate upgrade must be processed sometime, and Kiwi_Flyer saw it on MMB before he hit the gate.

Yes. Requested at the gate consideration and it cleared approx 90 minutes before departure.

I was surprised it didn't clear earlier as availability was F8A8. However there were some QF staff deadheading so I assume QF held off processing upgrade requests until they were confident they knew how many staff seats were "needed".

I was monitoring MMB to see if it would clear.

An interesting side effect of deciding P1 really isn't worth it, is that upgrades suddenly become more valuable. Traditionally, I've always booked flex. Recently, in the absence of DSC promotions, I did the sums and figured that I couldn't be sure of achieving P1 and for the limited benefits to a domestic flier, I was better off to book cheapest flight every time. Only downside is that points upgrading becomes expensive. Those 1:10 upgrades become correspondingly more valuable!

Interesting way of looking at domestic flying. Aside from connecting to international services ex-SYD/MEL the only domestic QF flying per year I do is once or twice to MEL to see friends. For the domestic road warriors, and I used to be one once (a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away), I consider an official flow forward policy to be great news for them. For me, as I've long said, QF F award seat release is great but I've done very well in the last 18 months constructing award itineraries to Europe on non-QF metal anyway.

Flow forward is a great advantage in theory but I have found it to be of little use in practice.
Typical example; I have a job in Sydney, Friday AM. I'm not sure how things will go so book 16.30 Mel- Lst. This gets me into Lst around 20.20.
Job goes great, I get to airport at 11.30, hoping to flow forward but it doesn't work. Sure I could get to Melbourne sooner but there's no seats Mel - Lst. The actual reality is that there will be seats, because a certain number of pax will have booked Syd-Lst and bailed at Melbourne because the sums added up, but that doesn't help my flow forward and intent to get home before dark!

Another useless Briefing just dropped.. a competition and basically that's it?! Not a discount? Nothing?

Getting more and more lame, QF
(I almost miss the days of the P1 of the issue fluff pieces!)

I was excited to learn that I had redeemed about 2.5 million points in 2019 😂

What a completely underwhelming communication. No hint of any plans to include P1s in Centenary celebrations, although I guess we can all look forward to our Diamond Edition of the Qantas Magazine later in the year :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Like many others, I would like to win the cruise. Not sure how points used are calculated, mine was over 5.5M, it sounds about right for what has been used by Mrs and MissM over the past 4-5 years. With approximately 1.8M worth of bookings this year I am well on my way to burning all my points by the time I fall from P1
