To all the newly-minted Platinum One frequent flyers out there... I'm curious to hear... what's been your experience so far?

Anything different?

Free upgrades?

... or all hype?

Made it to P1 with 7 days to spare, first time ever. It took over 4,100 SCs overall as I had been doing some flying on non-QF airlines - I just got to 2,700 QF SC. Should get to LTG in the next 4 months too :)

So, as newly minted P1, do I need to be home when they deliver the unicorn and crate of champagne, or can they just leave those at the door? :)

Not expecting much change in my travels, but I will have a go at getting some J seats for family trips, so I'll be reading this thread a bit more in details to understand how that works.

For nominating the person to give WP status to, do I need to do this before my current year ends (in 5 days) or do I have some time? For the Gold membership giveaway I can see the date limit for choosing, but not for WP?

If you are talking about the welcome kit, if you are not home to sign for it, the common practice is for them to leave a card in your letterbox and for you to collect from your local post office.

Congrats!
Will be interesting to see your experiences with the program.

Welcome to the club and as @kermatu said it will be interesting to hear your experiences.

As for gifting WP you can do that at any time there may be a link of the website. I can not recall if I did it on the website or called it was a few years back.

There's a welcome kit? o_O I was just kidding, I thought it'd just be a couple of luggage tags like for the other tiers.

Thanks all for the welcome :)

Luggage tags and QFF card plus a laptop case.
I got this one with silver writing and zip (not gold as per link). The zip has a "Platinum one" embossed logo.
Fits a 13" Macbook Air nicely.

It’s a laptop case?! I’ve been using it as a folder!

I got a much flimsier pouch that my old iPad does fit into but it's not one I use much at all.

I have on at least two occasions I think received welcome gifts from Qantas Epiqure (now Qantas Wine).

Well done kitkatff! Let us know what the welcome kit is currently - I got one of those black leather (?) ipad case things - which was nice, but I never used it as I use a large computer.

I am sure there is no time limit for the WP nomination - and remember, it no longer has to be to your partner - I gifted my last one to my daughter who gets great use from it as she would not qualify for any decent status on her own, but travels enough to get value from it.

Also, one of the things the P1 team offer is the occasional invite to events/etc - make sure that you check whatever boxes interest you in your profile (sports, etc) which I suspect may increase the chance for some events.

In a nutshell, you get a couple of little perks, you get excellent support from the SST (Special Services Team) when you have problems with travel, and you get decent help with releasing award seats. But apart from that you will probably not feel any real travelling difference to being a vanilla WP :)

But having said that, as you are almost at LTG, you have clearly experienced a hell of a lot of flights, so will appreciate any tiny thing that can make the insufferable a teeny bit less so :)

The option to gift someone Platinum will be an option/button/link when you look at your account. It should also be a link in the welcome email (although my welcome(back) email had it as Partner Platinum only even though the requirement had changed weeks' prior).

All done online. Just need the person's details.

Thanks again all. I don't do much domestic flying (maybe 2 before Xmas?) so wouldn't get much out of the famed shadow, and international for work is J already - unless I take the few remaining QF flights with 1st class I wouldn't expect much by the way of upgrade :)
Will be interesting to check out the awards and upgrades, as family travel is not usually in J initially - though I have been lucky so far with upgrades. For convenience (and availabilty?) I'll probably end up on partner airlines rather than QF, LHR is not the best port to go through for Europe, in my view.
I've updated by profile, thanks for the tip :)
Nobody flying a lot in the family, but will gift both plat and gold so they get more points when they do, which I'll then scoop up :)

You can have mine but the embossed initials wouldn't match :p
Well bugger me yours was embossed, my original welcome kit came in a crumpled QF box, apparently Aust Post doing ;). In those days iPad pro’s didn’t exist.

OT. Anyone reading this and on full disclosure @GoldCanyon340 and I both live in ADL but please do not hold this against us, we have caught up in person in a OW F lounge and through a number of threads have tried or being half hearted attempt to catch up again however our schedules have not aligned.

Front door just closed!

Flew ADL-MEL-CBR a couple of weeks back. Booked Y. Anticipated a comp P1 upgrade and indeed saw on EF that one was likely. Confirmed on check-in. Only the ADL-MEL leg (a mid-morning flight). Not for MEL-CBR.

Interesting as J on the ADL-MEL flight was full except for an empty seat next to me (I landed in 2F). Whereas MEL-CBR had at least 5 vacant seats.

Worked out well. Got a decent hot refreshment in J ex-ADL. On the flight to CBR ("lunch") in Y I got my sandwich and free wine well before J pax got their cold salad off-cuts.

Both flights were well under an hour actual travel time. So no complaints.
