To all the newly-minted Platinum One frequent flyers out there... I'm curious to hear... what's been your experience so far?

Anything different?

Free upgrades?

... or all hype?

About a week ago I got a phone call from Platinum one desk. Asking if I wanted to go to the Keith Urban concert in Brisbane with a private meet and greet session. I initially said yes, but then realised I don't actually like Keith Urban or country music, so would not have enjoyed it.

The funny thing was this was actually a few days after I dropped from P1 to a lowly platinum. Overall my year as platinum one has been ok. Received three invites to events - F1, Les Miserables and Keith Urban. For a variety of reasons didn't make any of them.

The most consistent benefit was the improved seat selection. Although it is a relatively minor benefit. I never need to used any of the additional benefits for awards and upgrades. I never had a significant disruption that the P1 desk could have helped with.

I received 6 free bottles of wine from Epicure over the period. Two of the bottles were particular to being a P1, not sure what triggered the others.

I received four free upgrades. Not sure if they were opups or complimentary upgrades special to P1. Certainly for one the check in agent rang someone up and mentioned that I was a P1, the plane didn't seem full so I got the impression this was something special because I was a P1.

On the whole it was ok. Not sure if I will get to P1 again. Although now with the EK alliance and MH joining OW, I might get close again. But not really worth it putting in extra effort to get P1.

I'm also not a big Keith Urban fan so my P1 meet and greet tickets went to my wife and her friend. I was also given two tickets to Cirque de Soleil in Brisbane and Les Mis so, over the course of the year, I've been pretty pleased with the P1 special events.

Not sure if it's because of my P1 status or not. However, I have been invited on the inaugural Qantas flight to DXB on 31st March from SYD. Also includes "Gala Dinner" & several events in Dubai.

I'm not one for doing trip reports at all, but I will tweet a few pics for those interested.

Lucky you Reggie! Have fun!!

Do you need someone to carry your bags?

Pretty awesome benefit. Obviously (and understandably) there are levels within P1 as well ;)

Here's a P1 experience for you.

Booked BNE-CBR-BNE for tomorrow. Had 4C selected from the time the flights were booked. Went to OLCI today and I was in 5C on the way back ... had a look and luckily 4D was available. Who wants a bet on whether it's a CL in 4C tomorrow or not (being Canberra there's a reasonable chance, but I won't be surprised if it's a bronze ... or crew).

You did well. I had the Les Mis invite (which I couldn't attend because my wife had to attend). I'd kill for an F1 invite :(

Should have taken 4B out of sheer bloody-mindedness.:)

I would have but 4D was the only seat open in row 4. Interestingly I am checked into 4D, but if I go to my booking on the QFF website, it still shows 4C ... I'll definitely be checking out the boarding pass across the aisle in 4C.

Question for those in the know;

What success rate have WP1 folks had in getting award seats released?

Would in the opinion on those who have had seats released consider it a significantly better prospect than a WP+PG?

Case in point, 2 adults , 2 kids who want to fly in J Mel/lax rtn - flexible dates with 365 days notice.

In regards to releasing seats, I assume they release classic rewards not ASAs?

Thanks in advance for those WP1's who have been down the seat release path and can share their experience.

To the P1 AFFers

Has you ever rung up to request a points upgrade (Y to J, or J to F) and if so, what has been your experience ?

Most comments so far were related to Award seats being requested / released on demand.

Assuming you had a positive response, how far out from departure date did QF accommodate your requested points upgrade?

Cheers

I'm wondering a similar thing.

2 adults, 2 kids want to fly J SYD/LAX ret in Dec 13. Currently WP + PG but will be WP1 + PG in approx 2 mths. Do I book cheap(ish) Y now and put in upgrade request (850k points so should cover it) or wait until WP1 and try my luck with awards...?

Sorry to hijack your query ReLoad but case scenario is so similar, hope you don't mind me expanding it a tad...?

Just before Xmas I got three seats released SYD-dx-SYD in J initially on the exact dates I wanted in September. I called a day or so later to change dates to the next day outbound and couldn't get that day so had to move by a day.

I tried and failed to get a points upgrade for BNE-LHR-BNE last year from Y to Y+ or J for 4 passengers; it was the school holidays though. I've had more luck in requesting classic seats to be available for points bookings rather than points upgrades (to answer a separate question, yes they release additional classic award seats for P1s rather than ASAs - which are nearly always available but the points "price" increases as supply falls.

Having tried and failed to get points upgrades for my family, I did then score an op-up for all four of us from Y+ to J on a separate points booking from BNE-SIN. I'm always far happier to get op-ups when travelling with the family than for my usual solo travel, as it means my family get some benefit from all my travelling (c. 4-5,000 SCs pa)

It's good (? bad) to know there is a limit to P1 powers.

Classic Award Seats, yes

Points Upgrade on request, no

Unless another P1 shares a positive experience !
