To all the newly-minted Platinum One frequent flyers out there... I'm curious to hear... what's been your experience so far?

Anything different?

Free upgrades?

... or all hype?

I would most humbly suggest the core competence of the SST should be proactively managing our end-to-end travel requirements, not tracking down internal form letter references. :p
I think you can be assured that very little time of the SST was actually taken up on your query or the carefully crafted response.

They just don't want to explain it further(which is fair enough) but the answer gives more than you think. At one point I was thinking the "L number" was like a lot number for shipping or something, but clearly it's part of their internal designations of types of P1 - be it what they consider "Govt spend" or "Original Members" or whatever.

Interesting really.

why it took so long to give a non answer is also interesting in its own way.

thank you for asking the question :)

Agree but in this case I think the L just stands for letter. The difference in gifts for those confident of not being Govt or non-alcohol is intriguing.

I don't understand why the L numbers are on external communications. They wouldn't emboss the customer's CIV (or QF's equivalent) on their FF card..... or would they? ;)

LETTER?!

you know what? I am so dumb. I never even thought that it might mean Letter 1, 2, 3.

BWHAHAHAHAHAA

I think I do not deserve this status :p

I think we are all overthinking this. It's a clumsy way of getting the right letter to the P1s. Slightly personalised as per L2, or referring to the correct gift (L1 vs L3).
And the clumsiness is simply printing it on the card along with FF number. Really see no need for that.

I think we are all overthinking this. ....

No we are not!

QF have some system behind this, and I think, as I said before, the inclusion of the "L" numbers was a blooper. They send DIFFERENT gifts to different members, which just happen to coincide with the different "L" numbers, and different letters also even when the gift is the same. .

Well I'm going to speculate that there's a L4 letter too. For original P1s but receiving the headphones.

I think we need a L3 recipient who is non-govt, of drinking age and has received booze before to query why they received headphones and not champers -- as I did last year. But appreciate that may not be something the recipient wants to ask or waste time on.

I've already thrown my envelope away, pity as I would have been interested which "L" I had.

Sounds like I would have been an "L1". I received the champagne. 4th going into 5th year as P1 and have been getting Champagne every year.

It's written on the inside of the card too, if you still have that.

I do love the end of year gift from the P1 team. I would never actually buy a $300 bottle of champas. So it is nice to receive.

But if I sit and do the maths, it is trivial. Way less than 1% of my QF spend.

I am not intending to make it so cold, so measured as to take from the fun. But it is what it is... I actually would prefer a travel wallet thatn something I can consume in an hour. Would far more value a truly iconic, lasting, real QF item.

I seek forgiveness in advance for this post – am tired and jaded tonight. My mind forever oscillates between different themes, targets. And in this moment is working on all cylinders on the reality of the P1 program.

I start from what I believe to be very real – premium pax are the profit in modern airlines such as Qantas. Ergo, premium pax are a very important area. To the business. Within QF they invented a “P1” level, the most frequent, profitable FF pax.

Excellent they have this, and I really like the support they give in travels that go wonky. They excel, in my opinion, in this regard.

But the Christmas gift? Woeful in my belief.

I will explain:

Let’s get real. Anyone who attains P1 does a LOT of travel. And probably are ok in the economic sense. So a $300 bottle of bubbly is nice, but nothing mind-altering. Likewise, some headphones to someone who does a zillion miles a year? Surely such a pax, if they felt the need for these, would have already sorted these basics for themselves??

Why is Qantas so unable to think outside the square? I would much more value a simple Christmas card actually signed by the CEO, than a bottle of mass-produced bubbly.

I find the current thing mediocre, ill-thought, really worthless. We fly heaps. Give us something that is memorabilia that is unique. Something that is essential QF. Doesn’t need a high dollar value.

I have little doubt that QF stopped monitoring AFF some time ago. The P1’s here are quite a few, and are a very valuable resource. Instead of spending on idiots that have no idea, I wish QF would get back to the basics. Which with P1’s actually starts here.

End of rant :)

Well I sure hope they are not monitoring this thread, lest someone in Loyalty say: "Hey, we don't need to spend $X00,000 on Champas and headphones next year. Those suckers are happy with the card!"

Obviously I’m only a first year P1, but yes if I could be bothered I would send an email querying that fact (especially given my father got the champagne though it’s not his first year as P1). Tbh I’m very much happy with the headphones, I already had a pair of QC25s so weren’t a needed upgrade but having Bluetooth is nice

The communications that are sent out with a reference of L1 or L3 on them are just for internal use and tracking purposes.

Non P1 here .. may I impinge on sacred ground?

That response is, of course, contradictory. A 'communication that is sent out [to P1s]' cannot, by definition, be 'just for internal use' :) unless the next, unstated part of the response is "... and we totally stuffed up in printing it on the send-outs. We really must have a word to Ivan, who is in charge of the P1 and CL communication office. Betty, the CL Dragon in Sydney is sick of fending off Nobody Bronzes from the Chairman's Lounge there. "
