Am now in the regional lounge at LST and just had to provide photo ID to check-in for the flights to MEL and then CBR. I handed over my QF WP card and was asked for my license. I asked if it was a new thing and was told "it is policy, it has always been". It wasn't a requirement on Monday in CBR. Not sure what would have happened if I had checked in online and didn't have checked luggage. Is it a corona virus thing? (there was a case identified in LST a day or two ago)

It’s been policy for Australian airlines since 2001 (9/11). They’ve been pretty slack enforcing it recently.

Actually, the membership card should be sufficient according to Qantas.com:
Forms of identification
Domestic flights within Australia
If you're travelling on a domestic flight within Australia (flights QF400 and above), you'll need to carry the following items with you:
  • photo identification such as a driver's licence, passport or social security card; or
  • your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership card, Qantas Club membership card; or
  • your Qantas booking reference (printed on your e-ticket itinerary receipt); or
  • the credit card used to purchase the ticket.

This travel was for work but I wonder if they'd want to see photo ID for kids or teens flying? We don't take our daughter's passport domestically. I've not been asked for photo ID domestically for 20 years. That includes at regional airports including Armidale, Roma, Launceston (multiple times), Devonport, Bundaberg, Gove, Geraldton, Hobart, Newcastle, Coolangatta...

Only time I've needed ID was entering a lounge when the attendant didn't believe it was my WP card, and thought it was my Dads (and also wanted to check I was 18+)

OK, so apparently it's been formally relaxed. It was definitely a requirement after 9/11.

Then there's the talk that the federal government is going to make security screening at domestic airports the same as international in the next few years, which would presumably mean ID checks (just look at how thorough the TSA are - even today 3 states are still not compliant with their Real ID standards). They'd laugh at us accepting a frequent flyer card.

Bring it on. At the very least it will stop the fraud that happens very often with people travelling on other frequent flyer cards.

My Qantas card has always been sufficient to identify me at any regional airport so far. Launceston is my home port so I can't really comment as they know me, but I haven't observed anyone else having their FF card rejected. If I'm flying Qantas, I always use my FF card for ID. Used not to, but I had a couple of occasions where I encountered some real tartars. I'm not generally a snob but it is a pleasure to see someone who was being politely (barely!) rude trying to smile because of a white card!
Different story on Jetstar. I fly out of Launceston regularly with them also (direct Lst-Syd) but they take great pleasure in rejecting the FF card and insisting on photo ID. Some of the Jetstar people also put in time on the Qantas check-in so it's not out of the question that the OP encountered one of these. I believe photo ID is actually a legal requirement so it's difficult to criticize them for doing their job.

There's no luggage drop-off at LST or ther smaller airports. Still have to queue for the check-in counter.
It's not really queuing unless you're really unlucky!
