Philippine Airlines to introduce MNL-AKL via CNS

Operated by A320. Cairns does make a very central midpoint between MNL & AKL.

Assume PAL will have 5th freedom rights on CNS-AKL, otherwise can't see it viable.

MNL-HKG-AKL on CX would be my preferred route if you put price aside.

As per airlineroute

Philippine Airlines from 02DEC15 is launching new service to Australia and New Zealand, with 4 weekly Manila – Cairns – Auckland operation. This flight will be operated by Airbus A320 aircraft.
Planned operational schedule as follow.
PR218 MNL2345 – 0800+1CNS0900+1 – 1600+1AKL 320 x256
PR219 AKL1830 – 2230CNS2330 – 0330+1MNL 320 x367

Thanks for that. Pleasantly surprised that CNS-AKL is not a redeye.

PR have tried these tag flights before with the AU market using the A320 aircraft.

The PER-DRW-MNL route did not last very long at all from memory.

What may (or may not) make a difference is rights on CNS-AKL. Obviously PR could not sell PER-DRW = bound to fail. I assume they probably can sell CNS-AKL, that conceivably could make a difference. Of course it may also depend on how many Filipinos there are in the two cities.

Well my friends from the Philippines who love Cairns will like this new route (more than the airline), put this together with new flights from Singapore on Silk Air it just gets better and better.

I had always thought trans tasman was open skies but I did read elsewhere that PR has rights for CNS-AKL and vv.

MNL-DRW-BNE still exists today so tag flights aren’t always bound to fail. Good on PR for experimenting anyway.

Current prices on CNS-MNL return is currently around $1,500 though. I assume that will eventually go down to more realistic levels.

I can't even see these flights, nor CNS-AKL on the PR website.

I've heard that BNE-DRW-MNL does quite well for PR, it was even upgauged last year to the A321 over Xmas.

Yes they will have to sharpen the pencil by about half that price if the trip I had to do with them is any yard sick, and Manila airport a joke, my Philippino friends from Davao try to avoid it.

It's more convenient for me living in TSV these days to get international flights ex-CNS. There's a QF connection every couple of hours, or I can easily drive up. Pencilling in a dive trip to the Philippines early in the new year to take advantage of this. Don't know how long it will last, but the schedule for the CNS-MNL flight makes for good connections to the islands in the morning.

BumP: Just wondering if anyone has seen any promotional fares CNS-MNL on this new PR service. It might be a nice way for me to use some QF points to connect to this service and do some business in Cairns at the same time.
