Petition to ban fuel surcharges on Airline tickets

Fuel surcharges have nothing to do with fuel.

And everything to do with wanting to monetize both ends of the frequent flyer cycle (win when selling points, win when points redeemed.)
 
And what do you think would happen to total prices if fuel surcharges were abolished?

Maybe we could have a poll:

If Qantas lost the ability to charge cash for award bookings, I think the number of points required for an award would:

PS: I don't like YQ either but banning it would have knock-on effects. The equation is slightly complicated by it making Y seats a more viable redemption option
 
Total ticket price (cash or points) would just go up.

It's essentially irrelevant what the payment is labelled as....it's just the cost.

Would it make you happier if they called it a 'carrier surcharge'?
 
The total cash ticket price would not change. Those are limited by the market. Since the labelling of the charge is irrelevant, if they charge $X now, removing the fuel surcharge will still see a charge of $X.

Award points cost. Who cares what that does? the market will ultimately decide if the price is worth paying or not. The points cost will adjust accordingly.
 
Fuel surcharge belongs in the base airfare. No different to CEOs salary. Catering. Cleaning. Baggage handlers. Etc. It is a cost of doing business and is recoverable in the base airfare.

Why does fuel needed to be listed separately? Apparently fuel went up drastically in 2004 so airlines needed a temporary solution. Cue fuel surcharges. Some 12 years later with fuel much much cheaper we still have fuel surcharges.

Ger rid of fuel surcharges from award tickets and if the points required increases then do be it. But I am slso certain if that happens that points would be worth less to anyone wanting to buy points and the airline may not sell as many points as they want to sell. Points cost then goes down again? Let the market decide.

It is a joke that my 60,000 hard earned points still require a fuel surcharge to be paid close to original revenue ticket on same route. Some would say ludicrous. The argument that premium awards are worth more means nothing. I should still be able to get decent value out of economy awards.

Seems the airlines want a slice of both sides of the cake. Selling points and redeeming points. Choose one. Can't have both.

Actually another way to approach it would be to attempt to force carriers to call it a "Penalty for redeeming frequent flyer points.", that would be more truthful and descriptive. Also with government and airport taxes - they must be described and listed separately and cannot be lumped into vague descriptors such as fees and carrier surcharges....

Signed this one. The current surcharging we face is deceptive, misleading and unreasonable. Airfares should be made up of two components only, airfare base and government taxes. That's it.
