G’day guys,

I was flying from Perth to Sydney on Friday 5 November (preferably afternoon / evening) and returning Monday 8 November (also preferably afternoon / evening).

On the flight to Sydney which of the flights (QF582 at 1:30PM or QF566 at 3:15pm) utilises the new Airbus A330’s with the latest generation IFE?

And on the return flight from Sydney I notice all the flights in the afternoon use 767s – do any of these have the new IFE?

Thanks, :)

DB

Don't have an answer for you, but also check the aircraft again - I am booked on QF777 Mel-Per next Thurs - it was originally and international A330 (ie sky beds) but has been downgraded to a 763. Damn! Not sure when you last checked the flights though

I'd be very surprised if QF upgraded the IFE on any 767s - from what i've read I think they can't wait to retire them.

582 is not a new A332, neither is 566 which is actually an A333.

It seems like QF mainly caters to the SYD clients and puts it's worst planes for PER clients.

I'm flying PER-SYD on QF572 (7am flight) and got a 763. It's rather pointless for me to fly in the afternoon as I would arrive SYD at night and lose a day.

I'm flying SYD-PER on QF583 (evening flight) and got a 763 too. Again, I would rather spend a day in Sydney and then fly back rather than pay for an extra night's accomodation and then fly back.

The Airbus 332 timings mainly suit SYD-based clients only -- depart SYD for PER in the morning, and arrive PER late morning for their day. Then depart PER for SYD in the afternoon and arrive SYD at night, and then get home.

That said, at least we have QF services here -- ADL doesn't even have a daily international flight.

/rant over.

So to answer your question, think like a SYD-centric customer of Qantas, and you'll probably be fine. As to the rogue 332, you would not be able to tell now, until you do OLCI (as mentioned here before).

Actually you can tell by looking at seating maps (advance seat selection on QF or expert flyer) because the rogue A332 is the only QF 330 that has 3 seats in the centre bank of J class :)

That is not fail safe, its it can change as close to 24-48hrs out from the time of flying

...or even 0-24 hours out from the time of flying

From experience, I know to recheck my seat from time to time (especially when there is a 767 involved!)

Or use expert flyer as I did in providing the data above.

Thanks for the feedback guys. :) Looks like I'm out of luck on this trip...

I was thinking of stumping up for a J class seat for the 5 hour return leg to Perth, but no way will I do it for a 767...

(I've actually never purchased J domestic as I find it to be very poor value for money, especially when you consider what one can do in the USA or Asia with $1700 or what you can get with a DONE4. Looks like I'll just save the $$ for a DONE4 or similar next year).

That's for sure - at the end of year we have paid $1800 AUD per person to fly from San Fran to the USVI return - via Dallas & Miami. And that was even when the dollar was still at 89 cents. So 6 flights all up, 4 in F and 2 in J class with more than enough SC's to requalify for Gold, and a lot further distance than Syd/Mel-Per. The unfortunate part? It's on AA ... say no more.

I'd really like to see both A333's and Intl A332's Y cabins upgraded to the latest seats and IFE.

This way we can all enjoy great seats without worrying about which one you'll be flying on the day.

And SYD-PER is a killer up the back of Y class when on the old aircraft  - same as BNE-PER (I've had a 6hour 10min flight once!) and MEL-PER.

Couldn't agree more. It's why I pick my PER flights based solely on what metal is flying - 747 and A330's only.

And while QF is bringing online new 737's with Boeing Sky Interior (BSI), you still wouldn't catch me dead on these, their earlier variants or those horrible 767's.

The 330's were a bit forgotten by AJ in his new spirit speech weren't they
+1... very true.. i have enquired (3 times over the last year) into the int a330 cabin upgrade situation ..... and never have received a reply from anyone 'in the office'!!

Yep, completely and absolutely agree. Like you, its got to be a 747 or A333 out of PER for me or I'll go elsewhere. I'll move days and times to suit.

I think all the A332s now show 2-2-2 and Qantas J-class seat selection maps. The two 'rogue' 2-3-2 A332s have had the centre seat changed into a 'workspace' which is not shown on the seat map. They are the only ones with a row D.

I'm the same, A330's and B747's only for me. Just out of interest does anyone know how many how many of the dom A332's have AVOD?

I nabbed one from MEL-PER last Wednesday with AVOD, I didn't know If I was lucky, or if they all had it these days. (as a side note my CBR-MEL B737 flght had AVOD on it as well so I ws pretty happy with my selections that day)
