Hi everyone
I need to fly to syd from per departing on the 23rd (evening 11ish) and returning 25th March for a conference. I currently have 93000 points and want to fly business but the cost is prohibitive (as i just finished uni) and cannot seem to find a reasonable upgrade? any ideas/suggestions

I looked using Platinum status on QF and there are business class seats PER-MEL-SYD and direct SYD-PER to get home. Call them to see if they can book you.
Are your points with QF or VA?

As a silver there is also availability, outbound via MEL, return non-stop. The cost in business class is 72K points. You need to search for classic awards, not 'view in points' which is simply a $$ fare converted (very unfavourably) into points. Select the 'award travel' radio button at the booking page.

Thats great thanks for the help :) i didnt know about the classic awards doh! pity there is little availability on a330 mostly seats in 737

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Guys is it better to use the points locally or internationally?

International economy is one of the worst uses of points. By the time you pay Qantas' 'carrier charges' you are spending a whole bunch of points for a tiny discount on the standard economy fare. International premium (business and above) is generally good value.

Upgrading for international... unless you are platinum... very slim chance.

Domestic might be good value - but it all depends on when you are flying. If the fares are sky high you might find value in points.

Ahhh good to know! thx MEL_Traveller

The worst pick out of Perth would be PER-ADL-SYD as that is generally a 737.
Definitely go Classic Rewards if you are on line.
Don't go points plus pay ever.....
Hope you get set on an A330 in business class so you get the lounge entry, the business Suite, lounge entry and business Suite......

Called Qantas who advised limited availability on late arvo/evening flights but to try again closer to departure date as more slots may open

Umm sorry but I can see the reward seat PER-MEL (QF648) connecting to SYD-MEL (QF408) without even logging in(ie no status). You should be able to book this online instantly by logging into your QFF account at qantas.com.

I am shocked QF would tell you this when you called as the seat is showing available to book....

Coming back on the Sunday (quick conference!) there are 2 flights showing, but they're 737's.. I'd book the PER-MEL-SYD now and keep an eye on the return and hiope for an A330 to open up, or a return via MEL (maybe even the 787, though I doubt that :) )

good luck

Thanks for that i was looking for direct flights which is why they said no availability :)

With award bookings you do need to be a little flexible if you don’t have points with the other guys.
There are some large sign on bonuses for Virgin CCs at the moment if you are eligible and that would increase your options. Look up Bank Of Queensland to see if that one is still on offer.

Thanks Cove will look into it, just started a new job after graduating uni so will need to see what they reckon

With Virgin I am a nobody and often I can get business class seatson points with a few computer clicks. I only do this when Qantas has dust.
Im the same lost my oneworld gold when i started my degree, virgin i have i think 16000 points can fly virgin just dont think i have enough to sit at the front of the bus :D

Just go and book it online. I hope it didn't take too long waiting on the phone to talk to QF
(and sadly the agent should have been more proactive to suggest the PER-MEL-SYD option)

also note you want the A330 product as others have said. Not the 737 for flights like that (I mean PER-MEL/SYD, not the short MEL-SYD v.v sectors where 737's dominate and it's a short flight.
