Do you get penalised for a no show on a Qantas awards booking? I just don't see the benefit of cancelling a flight which will cost me extra 6k points when I roughly paid the same amount of points for the flight.

As long as it is the last flight on an itinerary, there wouldn’t be any penalty other than loss of fare. You would likely still be able to get the taxes refunded, but if you are going to go through that process, then you may as well cancel prior and get the few points back that makes up the difference.

If there are other flights on the itinerary after that one, then a no show risks the cancellation of those as well. Even though it is an Award Seat.

How much were the airport/fight taxes to go/going with the fare in points you paid?
If the taxes were $300 or so, ie, international award, then I would probably 99% go and cancel the flight, that $300 would/could be very useful.
If say, $200, I might still phone up and cancel, under that, I would let it slide.
OT, JQ cancelled a flight on me, for which I had booked a Y seat, couldn't do OLCI the night before, I didn't realise that they were already cancelling the flight, got to airport, 4 hours before flight, MEL - ADL, nope, still couldn't check in, via kiosk or mobile device, still wasn't told specifically flight was cancelled.
Went to QFd MEL QP Lounge, told to wait till later to check in, was in lounge, then lucky I sort of heard the mobile phone go off, yep, my JQ flight got cancelled.
Rushed down to QF to book a flexY MEL - ADL, couldn't wait till the next day, JQ had offered a $150 hotel voucher, but where can you get a hotel booked there and then, for that price, even Ibis budget wouldn't have that cheap, for there and then booking.
I think the JQ fare was $149 or so, to sum up, I had now paid double taxes, the JQ flight and the QF flight, had to work next day, early.
JQ flight taxes was probably I would guesstimate, $29 or so, piffly.
In the end, up to you, OP.

Cancellation isn’t an extra 6k points, it’s the amount paid minus 6k points is it not?

That being the case why wouldn’t you just cancel the flight?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

It's a refund of fare paid less the 6k penalty, you should get the cash back plus a couple of points.

I can't think of a scenario where it would NOT make sense to cancel a classic reward. Even if you booked a <600miles flight on JQ at a 30% discount, the taxes you'd get back would make up for the points penalty.

Interesting question though if you'd actually be charged additional points if your initial booking was for less than 6000 points.
