Hi all

Usually when one books a Qantas classic award seat there are various taxes, charges and of course fuel surcharges to pay.

With Virgin one can choose to pay some extra points to cover these extra charges. Can one do the same with Qantas? If so, how?

cheers Peter

In my past 20 year relationship with the roo, I have never seen that option on the QF website.
Always have had to stump up with the $ to pay for the taxes component.
Probably it helps QF then onsend the funds to the authority that actually charges QF the taxes/levies due.
Domestic/foreign airport security charges/personal movement charge/fuel levy/foreign exchange charges/domestic/foreign airport charges.
Ever notice how when you pass an airport (human) scanner, they always note the tally of people they scan with the bomb residue wand?
I have seen the lines across and the lines down with the staff initials on the pad.

Thanks Poochie

Virgin offer this option. I would love to see Qantas, in the interest of keeping their frequent flyer scheme competitive, offer us the ability to pay the taxes and charges with points.

I guess it depends how many points you have. With QF valuing their points at .007c each, $500 in carrier surcharges is going to add a whopping 71,000 points to a booking (which could be more than the cost of the award).

71,000 points is enough for a business class award one way to most of asia which to me seems a better use.

On what do you base the statement that they value each point at 0.007c? Seems a bit low...

IIRC it's their 'notional value' assigned to points prizes in competitions (found in the small print for regulatory purposes).

But to see this in 'real life' you can look at a standard booking on the QF website. A one way economy class MEL-SYD on 1 October next year is $125. Choosing the 'pay with points' option it comes in at 18100 points. Or A little over .0069c per point. Similarly a $293 fare on the same day is 42300 points, same .0069c per point.

A one way SYD-LAX on the same day is $1493 or 198500 points. This time slightly better value at .0073c per point.

Maybe it's not on all flights, but I often get presented a slider to choose/opt to pay some/all the charges in points.

The calcs being done on this thread are wrong. It’s approx 0.7c or $0.007 per point. 0.007c is incorrect.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Yes. in some cases I used 'c' rather than '$'. but otherwise the amounts and calculations are correct. hopefully most people understood the intention of the post.

a very expensive way to pay carrier charges :(

Yep I figured that’s what people were doing. :)

And agree, very poor use of the points. Much better value to be had.
