Hi everyone,

I sublet a property in Melbourne and I need to pay my housemate our rent for two months. I was going to do a direct bank transfer, but is there any way I can use the Amex card (or a service that enables me) to pay him?

Thank you!

Hi Lordgrimstad,

There are 2 ways for person A to pay person B for anything using a credit or charge card

1) is for Person B to have a Merchant account which accepts credit cards as payment with a bank.

2) I think paypal and other third party transaction companies offers a service, but person B must also be setup with paypal as a merchant/business.
Overall for a smalltime one of merchant the fees associated with it will be very high and not worth it.

For example to send money to family and freinds: paypal charges 2.4% + 30 cents per transaction. Also you will need to see in your card's T&C whether sending money to someone via paypal credit card service qualifies for points accumulation - I would think not.

for a business merchant selling stuff: paypal charges 2.6% + 30 cents which discounts to 1.1%+ 30cents if volumes are > $150000

Do your friend a favour make it simple and pay cash

Have a $3000 threshold to reach for bonus points with my card.

We have an ABN if that makes it any different, although I assume that route would be inherently dodgy...

Dont know your particulars. Please read your card's T&C as see what it says about paypal payments.

You may have ABN but does the person you are paying and who needs to setup a paypal business account have an ABN number, but person B dont need ABN if all you are doing is sending money to them.

I guess what you are saying is you want to spend $3000 asap whether you earn points from it or not. I guess you could try. In the end you lose only 2.4% but may gain some bonus points.

Let us know how you go.

It's with this card, to get the 80,000 bonus points: The American Express Qantas Premium Card

Do you think the T&C would prohibit this? It doesn't seem like it from the T&C.

thats really irrelevant.

Use paypal, cost you 2.4% thats it.

For $3000 you are talking about $72.30 via Paypal.

You need to know if the paypal transfer counts as an eligible transaction. The only way to know is to see if you actually get points for the transfer.

1) If you have a few months left make a small payment of $100 via paypal and see if you get the points. That will take a month or so to see the points credited. If yes pay the balance and lose $72.30.

2) If you don't have a much time before expiry of bonus point offer, use the paypal method. Lose $72.30. If you get the points then great. If not, c'est la vie

Essentially - lose $72.30 maybe get 80K points in return. Are you game?

With amex you will know if the transaction was points earning as soon as the transaction is finalised and hits your account.
