I was under the impression that new passports took 3 weeks to issue but checking again today I see a childs passport takes 6 weeks. They can issue passport in 3 weeks but a priority service fee of $183 is due on top of the $139 for the 5 year child passport.

Daughter has 12 month multiple entry tourist visa but will be leaving next week and will return in ~5 weeks. They did mention that next time around she'll need to enter Australia on an Australian passport. Guess I'll have to cough up the additional $183. :(

Unfortunately it seems you will either have to stump up the cash, or move your trip by a week or two. An Australian citizen can't enter Australia under a visa.

Like most other things this has become crazily slow.

Moving trip is non negotiable as the non-refundable tickets are purchased already.

Some parts of the website mention 3 weeks if all information is at hand. Others mention up to 6-8 weeks if anything missing. I pushed them in Thailand and got things going quicker. It is possible straitman.

Not true about an Australian Citizen not entering on a visa. My daughter did it in November. She'll be able to exit Thailand on her Thai passport as she has a valid Australian 12 month multiple entry visa. Would Australian Immigration refuse to let her in without an Australian passport? Send an Australian citizen back to where?

That'd be funny. Not that I would do anything like that so guess would need to stump up the cash for priority service if they won't deliver in 3 weeks. Find out next Tuesday.

An australian cannot enter Australia on a visa. An Australian can't be refused entry to Australia, and can be admitted without a passport. But they can't be admitted on a visa.

So all is set for her to return in March without a need for overpriced priority service passport?

Re: Passport changes

But will she be allowed to depart Australia without an Australian passport?

That's something you'd need to seek advice from the Australian authorities or an immigration agent.

You may also need to consider the ramifications for your wife if she is using a tourist visa. Immigration may decide, given the circumstances, that your wife is not travelling to Australia as a genuine tourist (and should for example be on a partner visa etc). This may mean she is denied entry, but that again would be something for discussion with the relevant authorities or an immigration agent.

Re: Passport changes

As far as I am aware she will be ok to depart. My wife has to depart as her 3 months are up. Not sure they'll want to separate mum and daughter and keep a screaming baby here while her mum goes back.

MEL_Traveller the intention is that I'll move to Thailand when I retire in 3 years time so a partner visa at ~THB192,000 is not required. There's no reason they won't allow wife to continue with 12 month tourist multiple entry tourist visas.

But yes handle immigration with caution. I can be very convincing when I have a whinge and I am not afraid to speak up and I usually get my way. See how we go next week.

They will let her enter on the tourist visa a few times, but will get to a point when she will be told she is on the wrong visa type. There will come a point when she will be required to sort it out.

Understood. I think I can expect 2 x 12 month multiple entry visas before they question visa type. And then I may be able to get a 3rd 12 month multiple entry visa. Just trying to defer the ~AUD8,000 cost for partner visa. Ridiculous that an Australian citizen has to pay that amount to bring wife and daughter into the country when many illegals get in cheaply.

So, how was that Virgin flight to the US?? <grin, duck, run> :)
Don't laugh. Next week's cheap SQ flight has the potential for the same type of thread. ;)

My friend's partner was refused entry to Australia on the third entry... not third visa.... Told that as a partner a tourist visa was the incorrect visa. You may get issued a tourist visa no problem, it's border force who will stop and question the intentions. Pretty easy for immigration to pick up, passenger is stopped and asked how they are going to support themselves in Australia... as soon as 'husband' is mentioned, calls in to question claims of being a tourist.

part of it of course depends how often the tourist visa is being used... one or two entires a year may not be a problem. Three entries and what sort of 'tourist' needs to be spending that amount of time in Australia?

The reason I raised the question is because of this advice from the Australian Government site: https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Citi/Curr/Citizenship-through-travel

As an Australian citizen you must always leave and enter Australia on an Australian passport. If you also have a passport from another country you can use that for travel once you have left Australia.

I was hoping for 4 entries with this visa. When we applied I mentioned at least 3 visits and the issue was not raised. Plus wife will be entering Australia with me.

FWIW I my daughter's 12 month multiple entry tourist visa was issued after she became an Australian citizen.

Also I travelled to Thailand 9 times last year. What sort of tourist does that?

That's an interesting one. So in theory daughter cannot leave next week? Even a priority service passport won't be that quick.

So comes back to my question earlier. Would they stop my daughter from leaving as her mum has to leave the country? It would be totally illogical to stop my daughter from leaving but if they do stop her then who is going to take care of my daughter? I can't. Foster care? That'd be total stupidity on the part of any immigration officer but I can see how there might be issues next week.

Too late to do anything now. Just thinking about being turned around gives me a headache.

Perhaps I am missing something but is it not a two or three day turnaround for a Priority Passport application?
Three weeks is the standard time specified, is it not?

You are right. It is 3 weeks if all information has been provided and priority passport is 2 business days + delivery time.

Worrying for nothing. May try and do tomorrow morning and passport should be home by Friday?

Re: Passport changes

The main point about ABF is the questions they ask.
Worst is if the wife gets escorted to the interview room in the secure zone.
Us Aust citizens have it easy coming in and out in 99.9% of cases.
Visitors have it harder.
All the best of luck JohnK.

A visa does not automatically allow unrestricted access... final determination is always left to the border where a risk assessment will be made.

If your daughter was refused exit clearance of course you would look after her, balancing work with home and child care arrangements, like thousands of single parents do.
