Hi all,

I'm wondering what the chances are for CX to release J awards mid-December this year 2017 from HKG to the east coast of Australia. It'd be part of my OW Explorer itinerary. I need to get from Xi'an to Brisbane. Luckily at this stage I already have QF PEK-SYD-BNE locked in in J but would prefer, if possible, to change it to Cathay Dragon XIY-HKG then either QF or CX to BNE (preferably CX as can fly direct.) I'm looking to fly on December 17 or 18.

Do you think something will come up last minute on CX? Otherwise I could try and get QF to release inventory from HKG-SYD/MEL.

Thanks in advance.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Do you mean this year (2017) or next year (2018)? Reward seats for December 2018 won't be released until December 2017 at the earliest. So if you work out how many days in advance they release reward seats, then you should be able to work out the day to snap up the reward seats for the day of travel you desire, barring block-out periods of course.

Sorry I meant 2017!

If CX releases awards from now it is most likely to be around the 2-week, 1-week, or 'couple day' period before departure. This is traditionally when CX opens up anything remaining that they don't think they can sell.

No harm in checking periodically anyway, just in case, but more likely close in. Although it is coming up to ultra-peak period with people returning home for Christmas, so there may not be anything released at all.

You're lucky you have alternative arrangements, it takes the pressure off!

Exactly my thinking. It would be nice to get to BNE direct from XIY but it's no big deal training it PEK. Still, I'll keep checking. I wonder, can you change OW Explorer fares once you've taken the initial flight (for me it's Dec 5)

A oneworld explorer can be changed at any time. Do you mean a oneworld award, which can't be changed after the first coupon is used?

*UPDATE*
Called the service centre yesterday and put in a request for a J seat to be released on QF118 for mid December. All approved without a problem. The Cathay Dragon connection from XIY-HKG was all approved so I've now got a completely linked up One World itinerary.
LHR-HKGx-XIY-HKGx-SYDx-BNE-NRT-JFK-LCY

Thanks a bunch for everyone's advice. It's the first time I've pieced together something so complex (with my girlfriend joining me for half the flights using AA points purchases): I couldn't have done it without AFF.
