Overview of Best Qantas Status Run Options [not the discussion thread]

HOT Business Class Fare: Bangkok - Beijing Under $400 Roundtrip - View from the Wing - View from the Wing

320 (60+120+120+60) status credits for $381.40 USD on MH. That's $1.19 per SC!

Very good SR if you're up that way.

Since it came from this blog, my guess is that the rate is in US Dollars (still good, but just to clear up).

Whether or not it has been pulled or the cheap inventory has evaporated, it doesn't surprise me, nor should it surprise anyone else.

MH370 and the Chinese.... the former is as good as a persona non grata in the Middle Kingdom. Rather brave of MH to maintain the routes; rather interesting of the Chinese to still allow them to operate it!

One thing to note is that you may need to cleverly nest this kind of fare or use some other slick trick. Otherwise, you will need a Chinese visa to potentially make this work (which will add the better part of USD 100+ and visa processing time). "Transit" (without visa) at Beijing will not work as TWOV is only valid for bona fide transit passengers to third nations.

Even with the cost of the visa added, it's still bloody cheap! Would still be well under $2/SC

The number of SCs earned however should be 40+100+100+40, so even with a Chinese visa at say US$100, it's US$1.79/SC. (QF's milages are slightly off from GCM or MilageMonkey, I'd trust their calculator for SC earn rather than using GCM or MM and comparing it to charts.)

For piece of mind however I'd pay a little extra to avoid having to deal with China and still do runs in the US though. There are options in the states that can get you 1400+ SC in 6 days for sub US$2.2/SC.

While it would reduce the benefits of the SC run, combine with a cheapish round trip to a third country after your quick stop in PEK, continuing on as a connection with the return. Flying in with MH leaves the possibilities of Russia (S7), Mongolia, Japan(JL), Korea and Hong Kong(CX). Perhaps not a true SC run, but would make a holiday much more profitable from a FF point of view.

I think that CMB to PEK or NRT (and likely other north Asia locations) on CX, MH or UL would also be of interest though certainly more total $$.

Happy wandering

You're right, I went straight to MileageMonkey and didn't bother with the calculator. All other mapping tools place that flight at over 750 miles as you have stated. Seems QF customises their own geographic distances to suit partner earn tables grrrr. The second leg is indeed 100 SCs, my mistake. So perhaps only 280 SCs, but still a worthwhile if you can make it work. It may not be available now, but I bet it returns at some time in the future.

BTW, if you want an easy AA SR here's one for ya - LAX-ORD-MIA-ATL and vv. 250 SCs (120+90+40) for $465 USD = $1.85/SC. Easy for Oz flights arriving into LAX and each direction can be done in a day.

Hmmm, the points calculator only offers the first leg at 40 SC as you rightly point out, but all other mapping tools place that flight at over 750 miles so it should be 60 SCs! The second leg is indeed 100 SCs, my mistake. So perhaps only 280 SCs, but still a great deal if you can make it work.

BTW, if you want an easy AA SR here ya go - LAX-ORD-MIA-ATL and vv. 250 SCs (120+90+40) for $465 USD = $1.85/SC. Easy for flights arriving into LAX and each direction can be done in a day.

Yeah QF has a fair bit of discrepancy in distances, that's why for anything that's close to the margins I always check with the QF calculator to find out QF's actual mileage given.

That's a nice run! Too bad I'd prefer to avoid ORD in winter, besides need to head to NYC and there's a run published on FT's BA TP run thread that gets me there for $2.11/SC.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

For those who cant go to LOTFASC to do SCruns,

try QF website MEL-CHC via SYD. Price is the same as a SYD-CHC but 2 sectors so more SC

Approx $1750 for 240 SC = 7.3SC/$

Will have to overnight in CHC

Yes a lot of US domestic flights sell first class fares at very discounted prices. If you book via QF website and book a business class fare on say SYD-NYC via DFW, the DFW-NYC leg is actually a first class seat on American airlines but because its a J fare you only get SC for J.

That's only true if you book the DFW-NYC flight on a QF flight number if you book it on a AA number on the same itin and fare (ie SYD-NYC) you'll earn at the F rate on the DFW-NYC segment. Only thing is it won't count towards QF SCs earned or squiggles.

AA flight number will give you QF SC but not squiggles.
The SC is at the higher F levels as well. Though FF points slightly lower.

That's essentially what I said. The F class AA flight will earn at F rates on QF's partner earning tables, and because it's not a QF flight number you won't earn squiggles or have the SCs count towards your QF SCs (would only really matter for loyalty bonuses and WP1)

Edit: Sorry Mods I see I have posted this in the wrong thread. Could you please move to Best QF Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion. Thanks!

I think that you should be able to just re-post in that thread and then delete from this one?

I need to book MLE-CMB for Jan and was thinking UL for QF points/SCs. Shame about the date range.
