Perth is no better
PER lounge is not small nor undergoing renovations though. It's a coughpy lounge, yes, and the bar tender (I think he's Indian) is terrible, I think he feels it's his mission in life to police alcohol so strictly that no one gets any. I asked for a beer and a glass of wine once, and was told 'no, the other person has to come get their own drink!'. I informed him they were for me, and was then told 'no you have to drink one and come back, i've told you this before!' (quite rudely too). He recognises me as I go through there probably 5-10 times a year, but he's never said that. I'm assuming that VA have told him to be like that due to FIFO workers, but he was blatantly rude.

I think I know of the bartender in Perth VA lounge I drank my first drink in less than 10 minutes and was told no you already had one, it was a warm day, and I will be flying out of there on Friday, looking forward to seeing the renovations to the VA lounge in Melbourne, fly out of there on Monday afternoon.

never assume!!! 'blatantly rude'....maybe he was just enforcing the RSA rule and was sick of being taken advantage of....btw..in what manner did you 'inform him'?? there's always two sides to a story

gotta love the 'reason' ...."it was a warm day" ...lol...if you've got an issue with RSA...take it up with the governing body.

Re: The disgraceful state of the MEL Lounge with no end in sight

As it was Bundy Bear's first drink, RSA hardly comes into it.

i read it as a second drink in 10mins...i hardly think a barguy would refuse a first drink!!! if so.....i apologize

My point was that Bundy Bear was asking for his second drink within 10 minutes and was refused. I.e. he had only had one drink. Sorry for any confusion in the point I was trying to make.

Re: The disgraceful state of the MEL Lounge with no end in sight

I've copped the same from the bartender in Perth. I was there with my wife, and I'd picked up a beer and she was after a cider (first for the day). She was reading a magazine some distance away and he told me that he would not serve me two. I explained that one of them was for my wife whom I gestured to, and who waved back (there were around ten people in the lounge in total). He told me that he will only serve one drink at a time and that she would have to come up and get it. So, I took my drink over to the table and placed it down, and then returned to order a second drink. Of course, he again refused service.

RSA or no RSA, that's utter bollocks. Everywhere else has to operate under the same RSA rules, but manage to do so without rude staff (he was either rude, or simply very abrupt depending on your interpretation) and without limiting service to a single drink in a particular period, particularly when the second drink is patently for another patron.

I wrote a letter of complaint to VA on this topic (and a couple of other maintenance issues in the same lounge), but received no reply other than a generic "we are sorry we did not meet your expectations this time, we look forward to doing so next time" malarkey.

I said 'oh no they're both for me' in a normal voice, implying that they were for me. One was red wine I was asking for, and I wanted a beer first.

When I said 'blatantly rude', he "snapped" back at me when I asked and scowled at me. I understand RSA, but I had just walked in the lounge, and there is zero rules in RSA that prohibit the serving of 2 beverages to one person, unless you suspect they are already intoxicated (Which, I was clearly not and had not had a single drink that day when I arrived).

Two sides yes, but i'm never rude or impolite to lounge staff.

This was the day I caught up with you in the PER lounge. He was just flat-out rude to me. Actually took me aback when he snapped at me!

Re: The disgraceful state of the MEL Lounge with no end in sight

I really feel so sorry for all you Virgin passengers. I have never been refused a second drink in a Qantas Club, or a Qantas plane, even if only 10 minutes has passed between my request for a first drink, and then a second one. And as for Virgin opening a J lounge; when you see pigs flying past the window you wll know it has happened. Meantime enjoy your soft drinks, and please realise I have my tongue in my cheek. ;)

Glad to see it wasn't just me. The way he worded it made it sound like he thought I was a bit of an alcoholic (saying he'd told me this before, whilst pretty much waving a finger at me implying i'm a bad person, such was the tone of his voice).

The old Bar Dragons at the PER QP used to be bad, but I haven't been in there in several years so not sure if they're any better/worse these days.

There's RSA, then there's ways of administering it. RSA does not apply in either my nor webslave's situation from what I can see, it's just the bartender going overboard.

I once asked for a double scotch and dry in a QP (the measured pours the QP used back then, not sure if they still are, were 15mL which is half of a standard drink) as to have a single standard drink. I was informed I could not do that. I ordered a Scotch and Dry, and a Scotch neat. He sneared at me, and then supplied it to me. I've had other QP staff say 'sorry no doubles, but I can serve you an extra shot neat' too. I had one in PER tell me no doubles, would not pour one neat, and refused my request for a neat one a few minutes after I took the mixed one back to my table. I just went to the wine station, made sure he saw me, and poured a glass of red. He was ropeable!

Yes, I concur. I thought it was incredibly poor form both that they have such a procedure (and don't make not of it via signage and instead wait for you to fall afoul of it), and that they employed a man to be as unpleasant to deal with as that.

The reports of the bar tender from Perth have reminded me of the same experience some months back. Not a great attitude to have.

Re: The disgraceful state of the MEL Lounge with no end in sight

This is a long time problem in Perth - over a decade ago, the Qantas club had a curfew in that you would not be permitted entry more than a couple of hours before your flight.

This has all come about due to the antisocial antics of of a minority.

I will spare a thought for the barman - they have almost certainly been instructed to strictly adhere to these rules, with no exceptions - no self service and no "Shouts".

The staff in Perth should be sacked and the lounge shut down and the cost savings be used to fix up the East coast lounges where 99.99% of important people are living. If we have to travel to Perth we should just be made to suffer which is all we deserve if we choose to travel there anyway.

Re: The disgraceful state of the MEL Lounge with no end in sight

There's a Sri Lankan guy (Graham) behind the bar in the PER lounge and he is an absolute ripper. One of the best across all ports I have been to. Don't taint everyone with the same brush.

Yes, but does he serve two drinks at a time?

I've seen this guy in action myself - I wouldn't spare him any thoughts. There's applying rules tactfully and then there's..
