With its ongoing investment in new aircraft (in time A350s, A321neos and already a couple of extra, lie flat in J B773ERs with more likely) and very good changes to some aircraft that were previously shockingly configured - the latter the A333s that are being completely altered in their cabins and that now have terrific suites in J and at long last seatback IFE in all three classes, and 2-4-2 not cramped 3-3-3 in economy, with these changed aircraft (about five have been done) regularly on the MNl - SYD and MNL - MEL routes, PR is slowly becoming a better airline.

It's cheaper than QF but on a recent trip I thought it was better, not a comment I would have made five years ago. This airline also has extensive connections to Canada and the USA and also runs to London: most to the former and all to the latter are now B773ERs. Its fares are often pretty competitive. Soon it will operate nonstop from Manila to Toronto meaning a one stop journey from (say) Melbourne that avoids Sydney or Vancouver airports.

PR retains a poor terminal in very busy MNL (T2) that must have been designed by someone who never eats (almost complete lack of decent cafes and no restaurants) and who doesn't like to sit down (the seating is clinically cold, as it is steel.)

However there may be openings for debt collectors in this fast growing country:

Duterte to Lucio Tan: Pay PAL arrears or I’ll shut down Naia Terminal 2

It doesn't strike me that allowing a debt to blow out by so much is good business practice.

However threatening to shut down an airline that employs thousands of staff and brings in thousands of tourists and returning locals daily is mad.

Like in much of southeast and south Asia and some of northeast Asia, cronyism may be responsible for the alleged debts not being paid punctually.

Perhaps the debt is exaggerated, or it is another example of this President engaging in bluster? Mr Tan may have fallen out personally with the President, or the latter (who sometimes travels on commercial PR flights) may have not received his favourite tipple on board.

Is this alleged non payment of such fees also likely to be a problem in countries like India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand and so on not to mention numerous nations in Africa and Central or South America?

Does anyone want to volunteer for a new career as a debt collector in Philippines (or any other country where such fees have allegedly not been paid?)
