Hey all - tried searching for this but couldn't find the answer..

I have a flight BNE to LAX with Qantas Economy, I was wondering if you are able to check in online, print your boarding pass and go straight to gate with an international flight(plus customs). Meaning you dont have to be at the airport the required 90 minutes before. On the website they talk about a dedicated online check in counter. Is that just for people who havent printed out their pass, or does everyone need to do that. And does the online check in counter close 90 mins before? If thats the case what is the benefit in web check in for international flight with no baggage.

I have checked in many times before online with no baggage with domestic and just made my way straight to the gate... not needing to get to the airport the required 30-45 mins early.

Thanks

IIRC, domestic flights don't require an ID check (for now), so you can check in online and print your own boarding pass bypassing the check-in agent.

but international flights require ID check before boarding pass is issued. And i'm guessing if boarding pass is not issued before check-in cut off, your seat goes to someone on waiting list.

That's incorrect.

You can OLCI for most Qantas international flights and if you don't have checked luggage, all you need to do is be onboard the aircraft before the doors close.

Of course, you still have to negotiate emigration beforehand ...

I was told at the MEL F check in that you could check in on line and clear immigration/security, but your passport needed to be 'sighted' prior to boarding. This is done at boarding anyway or presumably can be done in the lounge. Presumably the airline needs to make sure you can enter the country you are destined for?

And no express card, which is one of the reasons why I still do human check-in for international flights even when flying with carry-on!

(although you can still go to a counter and get one if eligible).

I have done this many times.

At varying times, the passport has been checked:

  • On boarding a domestic flight in MEL connecting to my ex SYD international (the light flashed red - I thought it was an op-up :-|).
  • On accessing the international lounge, and
  • On Boarding the actual international flight (Something weird with my booking, this was the same MEL-xSYD-<usa> journey - I had to show my PP three times.

Done the counter thing - however, I have a collection ;).

Hah I also have quite a collection - so large I've recently had to start a new pile at the office.

If anyone would like a couple (arrival + departure) swing me a PM.

If you have already done OLCI but not yet printed your boarding pass you are still checked in so in the event of an oversale, in most cases the people that will be bumped are the last ones to arrive at the airport ie they have not checked in at all.

The majority of international boarding passes people are able to print out are from Australia to Asia, Europe, NZ & maybe a couple of other places. I cannot recall if I have ever seen an OLCI boarding pass already printed eg for a SYD/LAX flight.

I'm not saying it isn't possible, however you would have had to advise the airline prior of your passport details, address in the USA on arrival plus have a valid ESTA visa on file for that to happen.

Mostly it will show pax as being checkin in but there will be a checkin comment saying "check passport & visas" when the checkin agent must acknowledge & delete before the boarding passes will print out.

At BNE Intl there are 4 checkin queues - the first queue on the far left is for OLCI, second queue is general economy, third is QF Club & PE, fourth is J then the Supervisors are to the right of that.

I wouldn't arrive at the airport any later than 1 hour prior if you have done OLCI as you still have to clear customs, maybe get duty free then make your way to the boarding gate.

All international flights require a face to passport check at the boarding gate to ensure nobody has changed places with anyone else.

I have OLCI'd for flights to the USA and used them several times no issue. Do PP check on Lounge entry. (I rarely check luggage.)

Basically all Qantas flights on Qantas metal are eligible fo OLCI these days.
