Apologies for questions that I am sure have been asked before but so far I have not found where the answers are.

I'm starting to plan my oneworld itinerary and I like the idea of splitting the travel into 2 parts, maybe a month at the start of the 12 months and a month of travel at the end.

I believe that means starting or ending the itinerary outside of Australia. I'm in Melbourne and I have seen suggestions of Bali and Singapore, but I would be interested in other suggestions that will work and be a short cheap flight?

New Zealand came to mind - does that work? Other thoughts please?

My second question might be a bit harder but I am trying to identify airlines and routes/flights that have first class cabins?

Just wondering how practical a booking in first would be or whether I would just spend most flights in business.

NZ is a closer starting point in terms of saving mileage, but has similar surcharges to Australia and ultimately still means backtracking unless it is a destination you plan to visit.

MNL is well known as the cheapest and you can get there cheaply on direct flights from the east coast. But beware the issues of losing those price advantages if you make any changes to your itinerary.

Unless you are platinum and can request first cabins open up on QF, id suggest shooting for first will be very difficult. Personally I will aim for lots of Quite business in my next big trip :)

So After reading through this, I am also at a stage where i am looking at booking my Award RTW soon (i am waiting ANZ sending through the rest of my points to my FF account first).
Im Trying to do the following in Business.
28/7 - BNE-SYD-YVR or YYC
5/8 - YVR or YYC- LHR- ARN or CPH
15/8 - ARN/CPH to EDI (i could possibly make this a land sector and buy seperate cheap flights?)
30/8 - EDI-LHR-YYC
11/9 - YYC-??-BNE

When trying to put that into Qantas, i only get options that are not one world, Where as sky scanner shows there is other options, but if i put in my connections as 'seperate trips' i seem to be over the 6 flight magic number.

The other issues are: if i do the ARN/CPH flight to EDI, all of the One World seem to go through LHR, which would mean im over my 2x throughfares
With the first stop at YVR or YYC, i realistically need it to be at the same airport (in and out) to limit Land sectors to allow me to possibly not get a One World flight out of YYC on way home(buy a cash ticket instead)

Any Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I've been doing dummy bookings and the Qantas web site provides the itinerary and taxes payable but I go no further. When should I expect to see problems, rejections, issues, etc with the booking - at the payment stage, before or after? I've been creative and flexible enough with the dummy bookings to ensure availability but it all seems too seamless. Wishful thinking or is that's all there is to it?

If these are for the dates you want then you should have booked them by now. If you're just playing or practising then things are looking good for you!

If you are happy with all the flights, have the points ready, and it works online id be booking...

It can certainly be done online.

I booked my first two One World Classic Flight Rewards that way.

If the QF sectors you’re looking for are not showing on the QF website then they’re not available.

I have looked at the CX, And JL, but nothing is coming up on Qantas. I was more hoping for unique routing.
When i say it doesnt come up - if i put start and end of leg, it will give me say 3 options, but not the ones with the connecting allowing it to be a Oneworld flight. I have to manually enter them as seperate flights (to which they then come up)

Unfortunately whilst im semi flexible with dates (in terms of a few days here and there), The reason for the trip is various hockey tournaments (those dates are set) - Vancouver last weekend of July, Malmo first weekend of august and another in canada 2nd weekend in Sept.

I have settled on SIN and will let you know how it works out.

If your status is less than Gold perhaps transfer the points to your partner and have her account book the trip.

But other then gaining the potential to get her status higher, Whats the benefit of doing this? (if the flights and seats are already showing as bookable)

Surely you can use your home city as the middle point and also make it either the start or finish point?

So in my case, for example, couldn't I do a ticket to Manila/Auckland/Singapore and then start my first trip there and finish it in Melbourne. And then leave and return to Melbourne for the second trip?

The OWA would then be starting from one of those cities and finally end in Melbourne.

If you are thinking of flying QF metal then the seats are released earlier for those with status. If using other OW airlines only then I don't think status really matters, except you may have a shorter wait on the phone to get an operator.

Is there a cheaper option or will the fees change when I book the whole itinerary?

I'm trying to decide between flying Qantas (A380-800) vs Malaysia Airlines (A330-300) from Australia to Singapore/Malaysia on Business Class.

I'm leaning towards the Malaysia flight since the taxes are $120 less but would Qantas be worth the extra cost? Will be travelling with someone on a day flight.

If you can't find any availability on AA, then BA is one of the only options unfortunately. You might be able to find AY via HEL; i believe IB has similar charges to BA, though somewhat lower if you don't transit LHR
