Hi I have a Business Class FF flight to Europe but need to pay for a ticket to come back to Australia. I will finish my travels in Madrid. One way fares are horribly expensive does anyone know where to seek information on reasonably priced one wayfares? Thanks

In the process of doing the same thing as you but for a friend next year.

Used LifeMiles, cheapest option I could find. Will be interested if anybody else comes up with another option.

The only other thing to look out for is a Finnair sale.

Expensive is a relative term.

What is the best price you have found - are you flying Y or J?

If flying economy, low-cost airlines might be your friend. I'd be looking at the likes of Scoot (from Athens to Australia), or combining flights on Eurowings/Norwegian to Thailand with Jetstar/Scoot/Air Asia onwards from Thailand to Australia.

I've recently found that fares from Italy on QF/EK in F/J from Milan in particular, are cheaper than from Madrid. F return MXP-BNE-MXP (12 months return date) for 2 is $12,000 cheaper than originating in BNE and J is some $7-10K cheaper. Economy is not.

You don't give dates.... but on a randomly selected date in June fares are available on both AZ and TK from MAD-SYD for AUD$1096...the AZ ticket puts you on their metal through FCO to AUH....EY to SYD from there... the TK one has you on their metal to SIN via IST then on SQ to SYD....

That doesn't seem terrible for a one way.... YMMV.

Wow. Some many unanswered questions. Reminds me of doing the same with my first post :) Just a help with some details required:

a/ When? Is it a fixed date or range?
b/ Australia is a big place, want to help out with the where?
c/ What fare type? Business or Economy?
d/ Any particular airline or alliance? Status?
e/ Budget? What you consider reasonable may be very different to others.
f/ Are you heading to Europe any time in the future? ie. Can you do a return rather than one way (will make your next trip a lot cheaper)?

Without the details, I would consider 2 main ways: either via OSL/GOT or via CMB/BKK

Hi All, thank you for you replies. Some more information. I will be flying on about 30 October 2017. I live in Canberra so the only airline that flys direct is Singapore Airlines. Other than that flying into Syd, Mel or Bris could work. It would be nice to fly Premium econ or biz but would be fine with economy. Most points with Qantas (bronze) but also have Velocity.
As to price, an economy return can be easily found for under $1000 so I had expected to pay 2/3 that. I have looked at many random dates to see how much one way fares would be and it looks like it would be $1000+ for economy.
I will look at flights out of Milan or anywhere else really. Any advice really appreciated. Thanks

One suggestion you may like to consider is to book a return from EU with the flight back 12 months away. That gives you plenty of time to plan the next trip. Rinse and repeat.

This is a bit fiddly but works. You can join the Malaysia Enrich programme and buy a points+pay award fare. You only need 1000 points which you get for joining. The charge per point works out OK for Economy but is usually expensive for Business. You'd have to get to Paris or Istanbul (or London but expensive departure tax) and on to CBR from the Aus port

Apologies-had forgotten that MH stopped flying from IST and CDG. Don't think the points +pay will be much use from LHR with the taxes (comes up as GBP565 in Y and GBP 2727 (!) in J For September 2017).
PS:they're total one-way fares- not just the taxes

Use Expedia Spain or a European based OTA and you may find the fares to be a lot cheaper. Also try Expedia Singapore if you want SQ.
