The BITRE airline punctuality and cancellations report for October 2017 shows that from Melbourne to Sydney, QF had an extraordinary 5.8 per cent of its flights cancelled - 62 did not operate - while southbound from SYD down to MEL, 59 were cancelled, a rate of 5.4 per cent.

VA was also unimpressive but had a lower percentage of flights cancelled in each direction.

The adverse effect of protected industrial action by QantasLink contracted (Cobham/ National Jet) flight crew looks to have been quite pronounced in October 2017. AFFers may recall that this dispute is because the two contracted airlines' flight crews want salary and allowance parity with QantasLink flight crew, or something close to it.

13 of QantasLink's scheduled flights from Melbourne to Canberra were cancelled (a rate of 13.1 per cent) while the southbound QF (QantasLink only, not so-called 'mainline') edged up to 13.3 per cent as 98 flights had been meant to operate.

From CBR to SYD (northbound), 42 QantasLink cancelled flights occurred in October, or 8.8 per cent of the timetable. VA cancelled five, or 2.2 per cent of its schedule.

Of QantasLink's timetabled 469 SYD - CBR flights (southbound) in October, 36 got the chop (7.7 per cent.) Two of QF mainline's nine scheduled flights also did not operate but the above 22 per cent cancellation rate is distorted by the low number of timetabled mainline QF flights on this short hop.

Southbound from MEL down to HBA, QantasLink cancelled eight flights (5.6 per cent.) J Northbound (HBA - MEL, QantasLink cancelled nine of its scheduled 141 flights for the month (6.4 per cent.) In both directions, JQ, TT and VA did not cancel any.

There were six northbound SYD - TWM QantasLink cancellations (4.2 per cent) compared with VA's nil.

10 of QantasLink's scheduled 74 flights from TSV down to BNE were cancelled, a very high cancellation rate of 13.5 per cent. VA had two (1.5 per cent of its schedule.)

Eight of QantasLink's scheduled 25 flights for October 2017 were cancelled westbound from SYD to ADL, a shocking figure of 32 per cent, but again exaggerated by a low number of timetabled flights. Nonetheless, a cancellation is a cancellation, and anyone booked on it and transferred to a later flight may well be miffed due to the loss of appointments, being late for a family event and so on.

Seven of the 103 scheduled Perth - Port Hedland October flights (6.8 per cent) were cancelled in October 2017 while QF mainline cancelled two, but VA and its so-called 'regional' offshoot did not have any cancellations.
