Not sure how many keen cruisers there are on this forum, but thought this might be of interest.

I had a couple of colleagues on the inaugural Oasis of the Seas cruise recently.

It's the world's biggest cruise liner...check out the length of it in comparison to a 747, crazy!

I think I could be classifed as a keen cruiser but you wouldn't catch me dead on that behemoth. Horses for courses, YMMV etc which is why we have choices in travel.

Cheers

At 5 times the size of the titanic, I think I’ll give it a miss. Also this quote really says it all.

Carnival Corp. chairman and CEO Micky Arison said:
"Some people want a holiday in the malls of America, and others want to be on a cruise."

Sour grapes. He is the competition and his newest ship is 130,000 tonnes (and they're building more of them) so is bigger than anything that regularly operates in our waters. While Oasis is larger, that's as much due to passengers as anything else. Still not my preferred cruise, but I don't think the difference between their ships and this is as big as implied. There's certainly enough shopping and mall activities on Carnival ships as well...

Most ships these days are bigger than titanic aren't they. QM2, QV for example.

I was simply repeating how many times bigger it was. I mean, how much bigger could you get?
Well an ultra class tanker is about 7 times larger. But then it says that this ship is only about 3.5 times larger.

But I was really commenting that size comparisons with titanic ar not a reason to not cruise. On the other hand the fact that cruises mean that your trapped and surrounded by people trying to extract your money.......

Sounds like your average LCC experience, or a weekend in Vegas.

Its not that bad. My wife made me take her on a cruise with these guys on roughly the same route. They were excellent and given that your meals are paid for and all of the entertainment (except casino), there is plenty to do without having to dip your hands into your pockets all the time.

Well my preferred cruise ship is 8-16 pax.Dont think i will go past 100-130 pax.Count me out on this one.

Well, I don't have direct experience so I can't comment on the Oasis owners. But my Uncle did a some cruising around the Med. He said they also got the deal with meals included and it even said that tips were included. But on getting on board they were then hit up for another round of tips that were added on centrally and then also every docket they got to sign to charge costs to the room had a space to put in a tip. I can't remember the full details, but they were basically asked to tip 3 times of the same service.

I was hoping Oasis would be by 7th cruise this year, but was unable to attend the inaugural festivities (I was invited by a friend who works onboard)

I would like to try Oasis one day, but not until the prices comes down, so perhaps around when Allure of the Seas arrive and it is no longer such a novelty. I'm booked on a 14 night trans-atlantic on Independence for just under $800. A week cruise on Oasis for the same cabin is nearly double during some periods.

We (which means me) booked our cruise in AUS and the tips were optional at the time of booking. Meaning you could pre-pay a standard amount of $500 for both of us OR pay on board.

I didn't prepay as I have an issue with pre-pay tips as I won't know what the service would be like etc and I found no 'convenience' in it at all.

All drinks have a mandatory 10% or 15% tip (can't remember the exact amount). Not being a big alcohol drinker I bought a soda-pass (soft drinks to us Aussies) for about $50 inc tip which allowed for unlimited soft drinks for the whole cruise (7 nights).

Food was all included so no tips required there. Unless you really wanted to.

At the last dinner we were given envelopes for tips for each of our regular staff members (dinner waiters, cabin attendants etc). So we put in how much money we thought appropriate for each person (in total well under the $500 suggested - maybe I'm cheap).

I must say that the table captain who only came over to say hello on night 1 and then again on night 7 (to collect his tips) only got an empty envelope from us as he did nothing in my opinion.

I did it again when in Hawaii. It was convenient in that my twin boys were only 1.5yrs old and it was a good way to unpack all our stuff only once and bounce around to all the islands. Didn't have to deal with airport security and new hotels every night (which is fine for 2 adults but throw in twins and I didn't like that idea too much).

With ships like Oasis, aside from tips, there's no need to pay for anything else - and it's definitely far from an LCC! They're in it to make money and given you're often onboard for a week or so though, there are things to encourage you to spend on board, but that's the same with any tourist destination you go to. At least here all the essentials plus more are included.

That said, with the size of the thing, it will only be sailing in the Caribbean so it's going to cost a pretty penny to get over there, even if you somehow manage to get a good deal onboard.
