Another day, another anti JQ story, or perhaps a good JQ story trying to address customer impressions that are wrong, in short:

1, Jetstar makes it clear when booking you may not fly that day
2. Jetstar has a good departure versus cancellation record
3. Its not really saving much to cancel close to the flight time.
4. All airlines cancel uncommercial flights

Not enough passengers, you don't fly, says airline | Northern Territory News | Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia | ntnews.com.au

I think its good that the press is highlighting the fact that a ticket is not a promise to get you where you are going at the time inidcated, will be interested to read the comments.......

Cancelling flights due to low load is not just JetStar's speciality, it happened to me quite a number of times on MEL-SYD/SYD-MEL with another LCC - Qantas.

The key to fly all the LCCs in Australia is to expect nothing and pray hard for on-time passage.

joeymelb,

If it was your business would you fly half full aircraft and lose many thousands of dollars per flight :?: That is also ignoring the fact that aircraft are complex pieces of equipment and it does not take much to cause a flight cancellation.

At least when flying MEL-SYD/SYD-MEL it is normally only 30 min before another flight.

If you think it is bad here try flying around the USA domestically :!:

Yes I was thinking the same, QF have been doing it for years on MEL/SYD. But the difference is there's usually another flight departing within 15-30mins either side, so passenger inconvenience is minimal, it's not like waiting 24hrs or more for the next flight.

I am not trying to justifying the reason or accuse LCCs on their operation. Just stating the fact that flying with those carriers, passengers need to expect little or nothing.

When I need to fly interstate for business, I always choose QA for the reasons:
1. They have multiple flights - especially CityFlyer MEL-SYD, so one cancellation doesn't cause too much hassle for me.
2. Qantas Club;

I steer well clear of TT, DJ or JQ for business travels unless it was forced upon me by management.

I agree with you on the US Domesitc flights, they are plagued with issues that makes JQ, TT, DJ and QF look like 5-Star airlines.

On the SYD-MEL run three of the four carriers have both multiple flights and access to a lounge, you really fly QF for the free drinks, admit it

Sssshhhh... the management doesn't need to know that!!!

I have to ask the same question again. Does anyone at Jetstar actually put any thought into what they will say at press releases?

At least there is another flight within 30 minutes. How many flights does Qantas cancel where there is only one flight a day? Jetstar seems to think that it is OK to cancel a flight scheduled to operate 3 days a week.

Why bother booking with Jetstar or Tiger then? Cheap airfares? I don't need the stress of not knowing whether I will get to my destination on time or not.

Absolutely :!:

If you must be there, sort of on time, book QF or DJ.

If time is not important, you don't mind a possible/probable delay book JQ or TT. (Think of the extra FUN you may have  :D )

I've once been on a flight where there was more crew than passengers. Suffice to say, that airline no longer exists!

Done that several times CBR-SYD and CBR-MEL on Jet services. 2-3 pax in the entire a/c, then a few crew. Those kind of runs may be for positioning, but it's still strange flying on such an empty a/c.

Also did an AN MKII flight SYD-PER last minute for $350 return on an A320. Was around 15 pax onboard. Was like a private jet (shame on the rest of the public for not supporting them in their hour of need :p)

I had a ROK-BNE-SYD-LAX booked a few months ago. Qantas sent a text message advising that the BNE-SYD flight had been canned (was the second last flight of the night), so I called and they then said "oh sorry, both of the last flights have been cancelled to SYD" and the best they could offer was "a refund and you can try another carrier" due no connections... Customer Service reps line was "it's a public holiday and the flights aren't very full so we're cancelling them".

Eventually got it sorted... but yes, not just a LCC thing (and it seems they're happy to admit it)

Do people actually book flights and not need to be at the destination at a certain time?

FUN? Is that why my life is miserable? ;)
