Why would anyone want to put their life in extreme danger on a clapped-out 40-year-old plane, like the 737-200 that was ripped apart in flight in Hawaii several years ago (as reported in a recent issue of the CASA "Flight Safety" magazine)?

Just a simple question.

Why would anyone want to put their life in extreme danger on a clapped-out 40-year-old plane

I believe their main plane (ie the OzJet plane painted in Norfolk Air colours) is only 34 years old:
Norfolk Air VH-OZD (Boeing 737) (Ex C-GNDX G-CEAC OO-SDE ) - Airfleets

With the proper inspections and maintenance, aircraft can fly for a very long time. The incident you refer to, I assume is Aloha Flight #243 in which a large section of the sheeting of the plane ripped off during flight. That was caused in part by corrosion, part by the age of the plane, and part by the number of landing cycles/stress inflicted by the inter-island hops. Since then better inspections have occurred with aircraft of this age.

I think a lot of this was fleshed out previously in OzJet type threads. I wouldn't feel inherently bad flying an older plane, but do prefer newer planes.
