Just got off a Qantas ( Qantas link) flight - B717 - where the CSM at the door of the plane was insisting on a paper boarding pass - no phone BPs.

On enquiring of her, she said that they got a directive " ages ago" that said they couldn't accept phone only BPs. If someone fronts with phone only, they have to get a paper BP sent out from the gate, but the gate should issue it as the pax passes through.

Is this new/ normal on QF? I usually have a home printed BP, so haven't noticed before.

I’ve always had a paper chit/boarding pass issued at the gate when I’ve had an e one on my phone. Thought that was the system.

+1 to this. QF have always insisted on the paper chit if using anything other than a paper/cardstock BP

It's basically proof you've actually scanned in via the gate reader as boarded. If you just walked on with a mobile BP (which could potentially be forged) how would they knw you'd "boarded" in the system? The thermal print confirms this.

Having said that, one could obtain a paper BP from a kiosk and do the same, but that's going to be a little harder to forge I guess.

At any rate one needs to pass via an agent to get to the aircraft and have a BP (phone, card, paper) scanned anyway so... just show the paper :)

Domestic - need a paper copy (was originally due to CASA regulations and hasn't been changed since)
International - Can use phone boarding pass, no paper slip required .

Strange that Qantas still requires paper boarding pass whereas Jetstar now allows phone boarding passes only. From my experiences I haven't seen any issues with phone boarding passes, yet.

Flat phone....

I always scan the card, and then get the paper slip. In Adelaide the row usually gets chopped off or barely legible.

It is a small thermal printed piece of paper like a CC receipt

I'm well aware. I'm saying that IME QF require you to have it when boarding using a mobile BPor your QFF card unlike VA who don't

They even give you the little scrap of paper in DPO-after they have taken your aerosols though.

I’m well aware your well aware..... ;) I agree with your post and didn’t intend it to come across any other way

I was attempting to provide additional info to the OP

Don't think it is CASA. VA just requires phone BP

Thanks all, there you go. I've sometimes used phone only on VA, But only to be adventurous.

It's a bit redundant to even have a secondary check on-board the aircraft. Most overseas airlines don't bother.

I think for Qantas it's more of a so called 'service' thing.. Welcome back Mr. Jones etc etc

Did you have a paper chit? Just curious to know how you got past the gate without scanning your card or phone. When you do the paper chit is produced.
