No Spirits (in J) Masquerading as COVID? [Back from Apr 2022]

I flew BNE-SYD-LST yesterday and had a similar conversation, except CSM wasn't sure about Easter.
First QF flights in a while. Both J and no pre-take-off bottle of water on either. One flight was cancelled (I was moved to an alternative) and the other took off 40 minutes late 🤦‍♀️

Up until recently there wasn't even Bundaberg Ginger Beer onboard due to 'covid' was pleasantly surprised on a recent flight to find its being stocked onboard again. :)

In conversation the CSM on today’s CNS-SYD flight mentioned that she doesn’t believe spirits will return on Dom flights before Easter.
Just seems like absolute penny pinching to me
i cant see how removing spirits will save that much money for qantas,
im guessing on average it would probably save $1 per passenger on average, given that not everyone drinks,

Exactly, well it might possibly be a little bit more than that due to factoring in the weight of flying it around too. I remember reading an article about how Qantas had to consider the fuel charges for advertisements for its inflight magazine. Because 1 page might be a few grams but x160+ seats x km's flown = a not insignificant amount of money. So if someone is doing the maths on magazine pages I'm sure they are doing it on the weight of alcohol.

With all that being said though, the price of J definitely outweighs any overhead from stocking it. Like I mentioned upthread I refuse to fly QF J Dom until they return spirits (and I don't even drink on every flight) just for the principle I MAY want a drink and its readily available with Virgin. If they want to charge premium prices, I'm expecting premium service.

that was exactly the thought that came to my mind, but then I thought a bottle of wine is 5-6 servings, and weights the same as spirits, so in terms weight it should be less, but I guess you need to consider that you need to have 5-6 spirits to suit most prefereces, but then thats the same as wine as well

or maybe the $300 savings per flight x number of flights adds up to $100,000 per year\or maybe its just penny pushing senior management justifying their huge salaries to make savings!

i would really love to know

Maybe their contract for spirits ran out and they don't want to renew it until the number of flights and capacity increase, so they have better negotiation power with the supplier 🤷🏻‍♂️

While I hear the cries of penny pinching, don't forget income has been, well, nearly nothing. Airlines have been in survival mode and some airlines didn't make it including our very own Virgin.

When a business is on its hands and knees it's time to cease spending on every single item you don't absolutely need.

Well imo if they want $650+ Sydney to Brisbane/ Melbourne spirits is absolutely needed. Even if not everyone is drinking it. The core service (the only part absolutely needed) is flying people between the city's, they can do that for $100 tickets. Especially when virgin can do J for $300 incl the spirits.

I've written it before and I'll write it again. There's published J fares. There's corporate deals, there's upgrades/FF seats(yes, still "costs), and there's buddy passes.

I have no commercial information but I imagine the numbers actually paying the published rates for J are.. small.

Plus equating price with product while it makes some sense and I understand fully it also, to me, is a bit irrelevant.

If someone is willing to fork out >$600 for SYD-BNE in J.... what exactly are they paying for? the big seat? the F&B? the entertainment system?

Plus, it's domestic (OK transcon is 4-5 hours but in general most flights aren't that long). It's not SYD-DXB-LHR in F on EK.

I am NOT defending QF here. I think they should be able to carry spirits (one wonders how long the excuse about needing space for covid supplies will wash-if/when mask mandates end in flights will that be it? one wonders... but I digress)... I get VA does it so why not QF? What's the real reason...

but I do kind of wonder about equating of price with product for domestic specially. QF is not selling you a service to get a specific meal(see the other thread :) ) or particular wine or whatever. they're selling transportation in a class of service.

It's fine to note the J prices and all and think one should get more.. we all should... or to wonder when are we going to get back something like this, which was a thing for years so why not? Absolutely.

I just personally feel the "QF charges $x for this product...." well they're not promising to serve us anything.

I mean why do they hve bloody Grant Burge and not something a little better? Why is there not caviar? you can extend these arguments to stupid levels based purely on pricing.

and for those who really feel spirits are a thing they need on SYD-BNE(or whaever) they can go buy VA (or drink up in the lounge).

please note.. I have enjoyed a spirit or two on QF pre covid. So I would certainly be happy for them to be back.. I'm not one of those wowsers saying you don't need them as part of the product. Not at all... but I am saying it's not the core of the product QF are selling for these inflated prices.

also a reminder on basic economics... QF would not put up those J pricing if they did not get some bites.. probably corporates/people not paying out of their own pocket, but still.. if the market wasn't accepting the fares enough for YM then they would go down till they could sell enough to make it work...

but again most domestic J pax are upgrades, on discounted rates, buddy passes etc. Some do pay for J (I buy discount sale fares) etc but the reality is not many actually pay the published prices for domestic travel.

imo.

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but I've managed to have booze on my recent QF flights in J (e.g., SYD > ADL and MEL > SYD). Usually I order sparkling wine over my usual gin & tonic since I hear the sparkles from the wine will kill airborne COVID faster, so maybe that's why they are limiting the spirits selection?

Need a poll. Which will happen first

1) Spirits return to dom J?
2) WA opens its borders?

What about the third option:
3) Spirits return of travelling to WA without a border pass or quarantine?😂

Has been wine available but have been on dozens of QFd J flights and hasn’t been spirits for some time

Reckon you are missing something, unless you've been able to order spirits recently?
