It was announced on October but hadn't seen it posted. First T4 and implemented at T2 over the last couple of monthS.

...
Many travellers at Melbourne Airport will no longer have to remove laptops from their carry-on bags when passing through security, with Australian-first 3D scanning technology permanently installed on Thursday.

The full-time introduction of four "smart lanes" in Terminal 4, the $400 million budget airline terminal opened in 2015, follows a successful trial last year and aims to cut average waiting time by 50 per cent to about one minute.
...
The scanners will roll out to the international terminal, Terminal 2, over the next two months, meaning passengers flying overseas will no longer need to remove their laptops or liquids and gels when passing through security as the festive season nears.

I wish scanning in Australian airports would be more consistent. In CNS, they wanted the aerosols on the tray too. In MEL, they stay in the backpack.

thats fantastic news, now because even more airports are different I will be more conffused and still get yelled at by the security guys for not doing whatever I was supposed to do or not do.

Don't worry, the security staff had no idea what they were doing either when I went through T4 on Monday...

It looks promising though. The body scan part is fast and they have several manned consoles per scanner so they don't have to wait for the result of the last person before scanning the next.

They trialled this at SYD a few months ago. At the time I didn’t realise it was a trial so the next time I went through I didn’t think to take the lap top out... whoops.

Wow, this is great news when everything else to do with security seems to be on a hard trend of worsening. I detest the ‘random’ swabbing so.

ADL takes the cake on this one. Not only laptops and aerosols but umbrellas too. And they actually open and shake the umbrella just in case there’s a hidden weapon in there. Personally I think some of the stilettos I’ve seen at airports could be a more deadly weapon. 😆

If I could double like or even triple agree I would. You also forgot to mention that in ADL scanning is at best random, some weeks it is iPads, another umbrellas and sometimes both.

Indeed they have been so used.

Newcastle has had these for a little while now. The new body scanners seem to have a lot of false positives. Teething issues I guess.

In the old CBR terminal, there were 2 checkpoints. Once for QF, one for VA/TT.
The QF checkpoint wanted umbrellas out. The VA checkpoint wanted them in.
During the building of the current terminal when they had opened the QF end and were starting to build the VA end, they had both security companies working the same checkpoint while they worked out the new contracts. It was umbrellas in or out depending on which security staff happened to be working at the time.

This latest trip to the US from Perth I put my laptop, US phone and US Ipad I my checked in bag. I have not forgotten dropping the laptop going thru the security check about 18 months ago which made the screen crack and I couldn’t use it.

I do wonder if airport management sees anything wrong with this scenario or they just don't care because the security staff are employed by QF and VA.

I thought part of security strategy when using sampling techniques to save money (instead of 100% checks) was to keep changing things around to keep you guessing. Randomising the manner the checks are done is intended to make the errant traveller wary of trying anything on.

The problem disappeared once the terminal construction was completed. Now they don't care about umbrellas.

I went all in yesterday and they intercepted my netbook. :(

On asking I was told laptops etc. needed to be out for international flights.
