New Zealand records Fresh cases of COVID19

Getting off topic, but if you have time read commentary about the Act I mentioned and ask yourself why do Commonwealth Incoming Passenger Cards ask about tuberculosis?
That though is before you pass through. Immigration. As alluded to above, once you are through customs etc it is no longer a Fed issue but a state one.

Jacinda Adern just held a press conference, Four new confirmed cases in one family, acquired from an unknown source (no overseas travel), so community transmission in NZ, no where is immune.

NZ held up as gold standard, so will be interesting to see if they can identify the cause and quash the spread. On the plus side at least they cant blame NSW.
Cases were transmitted from Rotorua

I know in Victoria that every test sample was getting genomically sequenced. (Edit I have not seen an update for a while and so with the second wave this may now be different. There was a 2/3 week delay on getting the genomic results early in the second wave) So I suspect other states do likewise.

Given the sheer volume of tests the cost has probably been driven down a lot.

Note that some samples cannot grow the virus and so genomic sequencing cannot be done in these cases.

Reports from the Doherty have dried up. Possibly due to the enquiry. But just on the volume of genomic sequencing (and remember the lag will always mean that it will be less than cases. Plus some samples cannot grow viruses)

But on 5th July.
How is genomic sequencing being used in Victoria?
Benjamin Howden, who leads the public health epidemiology team at Melbourne University’s Doherty Institute, is currently working with state authorities to use genomic sequencing to track Covid-19 cases.

Howden said that as of Friday, about 80% of Victoria’s cases had been genomically sequenced.

He said bioinformaticians, who apply information technology to biological and medical research, gathered each patient’s genome data and compared it against other patients in the state.

A genomic epidemiologist then matched the historical data of each strand recorded to the patient that provided the sample.

There was conjecture upthread about which level of government should carry out quarantining of international arrivals.
Ahh thanks. So seeing as the Cwlth does it for TB, then the question is why not for COVID?

From Rotorua or to Rotorua?

The requirement for TB is not for quarantine. If you have had TB you will generally have to have a chest Xray.

However if you are Immigrating to Australia you have to satisfy the State health regulations -here is the situation for NSW.

thanks @drron, I'm learning a lot about infectious diseases this year!

Unfortunately it appears that the outbreak in NZ is growing.

These are all the ones reported in the NZ Ministry of Health's daily report.

Media release
12 August 2020
There is one new case of COVID-19 to report in managed isolation today, in addition to the four cases in the community in Auckland that were announced yesterday.
There are also an additional four probable cases, linked to the four confirmed cases that we announced yesterday. All of those probable cases are awaiting their test results, but contact tracing is already underway.
The case at the border we are reporting today is a woman in her 50s who arrived in New Zealand on August 7 from Islamabad via Dubai. She has been in managed isolation at the Novotel Ellerslie and tested positive around day 3 of her stay. She has now been transferred to the Auckland quarantine facility.
That brings New Zealand’s total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 to 1,225, which is the number we report to the World Health Organization.
There are five previously reported cases now considered to have recovered from COVID-19, so the number of active cases in New Zealand is now 26.
There is no one in New Zealand receiving hospital-level care for COVID-19.
Yesterday our laboratories processed 4,225 tests for COVID-19.
This does not include the large number of test numbers from today.
That brings the total number of tests completed to date over the half a million mark – 502,705. There were 888 swabs taken in managed isolation and quarantine facilities yesterday.
Rotorua
We have been talking with the family that visited Rotorua to understand their exact movements during their time there.
Based on the information we do have, we are confident that the visit to Rotorua poses a low risk to others who may have been at places the family visited or stayed at. We do not believe there are any close contacts of the family from the trip to Rotorua.
While information is still being verified, we know the family visited a number of eateries as well as at least two tourist attractions.
The family stayed at the Wai Ora Lakeside hotel while they were in Rotorua, checking in on the on 8th August, checking out on the 11th August.
The family visited the Skyline Gondala and Lodge on Sunday 9 August between 4 and 6 pm.
They also visited the Heritage Farm and Art Gallery on 10 August between 3 and 4.30pm.
Anyone in the vicinity during that time should pay extra attention to their health and stay at home if they become unwell and seek medical advice to get a test.
As we have more locations confirmed, we will publish these on the Ministry website and notify media.

There are now 18 active cases in quarantine in NZ at present. NZ does not include active cases in quarantine in their active case numbers.

4 is now 8

Mount Albert Grammar School was informed of the positive case on Wednesday night, principal Patrick Drumm told NZ Herald.

Three more staff members at the Americold warehouse facility in Auckland have tested positive to coronavirus.

Americold Managing Director of Australia and NZ, Richard Winnall, says the three people worked alongside a man in his fifties who has already tested positive to the virus.

That is completely unknown at present.

On patient zero the article states:
Officials were still tracking down the source of the cluster - known as the index case.

So patient zero is not actually known. Genomic testing is being done and that will either link it to a returning traveller or indicate a new sequence (ie via freight, freight crew of plane or ship, etc). If a new sequence finding the actual index patient may be problematic.

It may have started a week ago, or months ago. No one yet knows. The workers here may have been the first NZ infections of this genome, or they could be at the end of a transmission line that started at as yet unkown time.

You clearly did not read the meaning of my post.

According the ABC " New Zealand Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said as part of overall national response, "all confirmed cases are to be managed in a quarantine facility". " Taking a hard line and not trusted to ISO at home.

I totally agree however I’m not sure the Constitution allows it. That’s why there was the Ruby Princess issue when Feds and State Health didn’t mesh well. There are obviously issues in core alignments and responsibilities that haven’t been addressed for decades.
...so with functioning leadership at the highest levels in the our governments, bearing in mind that the Federal and NSW leaders are of the same political flavour, so it can't be politicking, what's been the resolution in those core alignments and responsibilities now we are four months further on from Ruby Princess?

After all, that's what great leadership delivers, doesn't it? It finds solutions to tough problems, owns them and delivers on them. I'll reiterate, we don't have that kind of leadership here.
