Can anyone advise what happens when a bag exceeds the 140cm rule, does Bag Drop reject it and you a forced to pay some form excess luggage fee or does it get excluded and has to go as paid freight. Looking to buy a new 76cm Samsonite Cubelite which will OK for international but not domestic

I'd be impressed if the bag drop scanner can measure the dimensions as well as the weight!

Guess you are impressed lol ,,,,, Shouldnt be a problem as long as it is not overweight you will probably just need to take it to over size luggage.

Good Luck

Anyone actually had their bag rejected? You'd have to be carrying bricks to fit 32kg into a 140cm bag!

The QF webpage states " The Bag Drop contains laser technology and scales which recognise bag size and weight" Measuring your baggage size and weight against your allowance Unfortunately the QF Baggage pages state the Excess Weight charges but not a cost for Excess Size
Checked oversized luggage before. Wasn't charged for it. Had it tagged at the check-in counter and had to take it to the oversize counter and drop it off there..

The auto bag drop (ABD) would only reject an oversize item if it was too long eg golf clubs (which should go to the oversize belt anyway) or if it was super high but I've never seen a case of the latter. I would think any Samsonite suitcase would be fine.

If you are a FF bronze or have no status your bag can weigh up to 23.9 kilos without extra cost. Unless you are a QF Club member or freq flyer Silver, Gold or Platinum, if your bag weighs 24 to 32 kilos then the ABD will impose a heavy fee of AUD20.00 & spit out a heavy tag which you then have to attach to your bag which in turn is scanned by the ABD so as to avoid a heavy bag ending up out the bag without being flagged as such & potentially causing injury to baggage handlers.

An item checked in by a pax as part of their baggage accompanying them on a flight cannot exceed 32 kilos for a single item due OH&S requirements otherwise it must be consigned as freight. If you had a large cardboard box weighing about 20 kilos that wouldn't go down the baggage belt at a checkin counter or an ABD you are still able to take this to the oversize belt after you've put the bag tag on it.
