I think I was the only one on a Qantas 747 heading for Los Angeles to ask for a form. It used to include cash and negotiable instruments like bank drafts back in the eighties.

Got mixed messages last time we flew in, out and back into US last month.

One FA told us that if we've entered the US on our current ESTA previously, we didnt have to complete the incoming card. Being suspicious of this, I fill out the card anyway. Arrived at Atlanta and after about the 4th person, agents started holding up the incoming card and yelling that it needs to be completed.

I've just been researching this... to use the auto kiosks you need to have entered using an (any) ESTA at least once since 2008. You do not need to have entered previously on this ESTA. No customs card is then required (supposedly). Any previous entry transfers your fingerprints from the old entry to the new ESTA or a new passport if you have since obtained a new passport.

What about an old ESTA and new PP ... or is the ESTA irrevocably tied to the original passport?

I have this situation in March where my PP will have 10 only weeks left so need a new one.

My current ESTA expires next May on the same day as my current PP.

Your ESTA will cease to be valid when the passport is cancelled and a new one issued.

It is irrevocably tied to the passport number it was issued against.

It certainly is. I have this issue now as I've just received a new passport.

I went in January with a friend entering the US for the first time, EVERYONE was told to use the kiosks.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Two years ago my passport was stolen while on a RTW and I was issued with a new emergency passport valid for 6 months.

I flew to and entered Montréal from Paris with no problems, however with my passport number not matching the ESTA information I tried to apply for a new ESTA as my next stop was New York. This was was not possible online with an emergency passport number.

I was told by an officious clown in Washington I would not be allowed to board a plane that flew into or over the U.S. and should make alternative arrangements.

Numerous phone calls to various U.S. agencies, an attempted visit to the local consulate, five days and a plea for help to the Australian high commission in Ottawa and to DFAT in Canberra got me nowhere.

After more phone calls I managed to speak to someone who told me I could enter the country over land and gain a visa at the border, so I boarded the train to New York City, endured a quite disturbing border stop and paid I think $14 for a visa.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I have a new passport and applied for a new ESTA for my trip to US 2 weeks ago...I filled in the Blue customs form for myself and +1 given to me on the plane; at DFW, I was directed to the kiosks, and after entering all the data, got a slip with my photo with a big tick on it. I went straight through. Unfortunately, my +1s had a big cross on hers (fingerprint problem I think) and had to go to an officer; the officer told her she did didn't need the blue form (which she didn't have as I had it!) as the printed slip had all the info, and after processing, she went through....so I think when you go to the kiosk, and get the printed slip, that replaces the blue customs form.

Mrscove received the "ALLSTAR" treatment with a cross on her picture so she had to go with Officer Martinez to an interview room. It was triggered by her new passport. The interviewer goes fishing around Marina del Rey so all good.
More recently we both went through in a few minutes.
Because we now have a US bank and US credit cards we carry almost zero cash and no bank drafts when we fly to the US.
